Further to the recent postings concerning the St.John Street Hanley death. Below is a message forwarded to this list with the permission of the Author, Dr. Barry Job of Stafford. It first appeared on the Mining List(not a Rootsweb list)last week. Dave 8-)) Listowner STS Pots and BC etc., <<<<>>>> The question; did the shaft remain open until the funeral, is answered by the report of Mines Inspector W. N. Atkinson. He records that "One side of the shaft was against the foundations of the houses on the east side of the street. When the shaft was examined it appeared as if it had been "tumped over" by a dome of brickwork... When plumbed it was found to be 40 yards deep, and nearly full of blackdamp. The sides of the shaft so far as could be seen were in a dangerous state, part of the brick lining having fallen away. Efforts were made to recover the body... The sides of the shaft , however, continued to give way to such an extent that the fallen stuff filled the bottom of the shaft for 71/2 yards and on the following day (Sunday) apprehensions were felt for the safety of the adjoining houses, and it became evident that it was impracticable to use the shaft to recover the body. The Mayor of Hanley, therefore, obtained the consent of Mr. Holland's relatives to the filling up of the shaft, and this was preceeded with a after a religious service had been held at the top of the shaft." So the answer is yes, the shaft did remain open, although the funeral appears to have been held the next day, and the shaft was filled to prevent damage to adjacent houses. Dr. Barry Job.

Jim: I would like to hear more about your Whittingham connections. My Whittingham family were potters in Burslem from (it seems) the beginning of time. I also have the Whittingham entries in the Staffordshire Burial Index, if you are interested. Jean - Mathers is definitely the Arnold Bennett ancestor. Unfortunately, the pamphlet I have doesn't name all twelve children of Sampson and Phoebe. John is supposed to be the oldest. He and Ann were baptized together in 1813, and may have been twins. They, and the next two (in 1814 and 1816), were baptized at St John's Church, Burslem, and I know that the registers of that church have been published (Hanley Reference Library has a copy). Then the next six were baptized at Swan Bank Wesleyan Methodist Church, Burslem between 1820 and 1830, but the baptisms of the other two have not been traced (I'm paraphrasing the pamphlet here, this is not anything I've found out for myself). An 1818 Directory shows Sampson as a potter living at Star Croft (later called Church Street), Burslem. If I find out any more, I'll let you know. Thanks again Graham. Eliza's father was Sampson and he was definately a Potter according to her marriage certificate. Think I might see if I have any look on the Potteries List. Jean
Dear Jean, If no-one has already told you, and you don't already know this, I have some possibly exciting news for you: you are related to the great novelist Arnold Bennett! Enoch Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was the son of Enoch Bennett (1842-1902), a solicitor. Enoch's father was John Bennett, who was the oldest child (of 8 boys and 4 girls) of Sampson Bennett and Phoebe Mathers. There is a 16-page pamphlet entitled "Arnold Bennett's Five Towns Origins" by Thomas R. Roberts, which you may be able to find a copy of somewhere, although it is now out of print. Also, there are two good biographies of Bennett: one by Reginald Pound, which is I'm sure long out of print, and the other by Margaret Drabble, who may or may not also be related to the novelist. I also have Bennett ancestors in Burslem. but have not been able to connect to this family - so far! If you think there is anything else I may be able to tell you, please don't hesitate to ask. Graham Pointon (Letchworth Garden City, but born in Stoke on Trent) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 20 January 2003 16:57 To: [email protected] Subject: [Pots] BENNETT, RUDYARD Burslem Hello Everybody, I am new to this list, also what details I have got are a little sketchy. Eliza BENNETT born Burslem Staffordshire approx 1824/1825 Father Sampson BENNETT Potter. Eliza married Alfred RUDYARD approx 1845 they had two children William and Sarah. Alfred must have died because she married my Greatgrandfather Rowland BAMFORD at The Parish Church of Burslem in 1852. They must have gone to live in Manchester by 1854 because my grandad was born there. Eliza was a Dressmaker and Milliner according to the Directories in Manchester and I did find a Eliza Bennett Milliner and Dressmaker in Slaters 1850 Directory in Pitt ST. Burslem, if it is my Eliza she must have been working under her maiden name. It is possible that her mothers name may have been Phoebe or Phebe. possibly (MATHERS) not too sure about the surname. William and Sarah RUDYARD went to Manchester with thier mother and stepfather and William had quite a successful Dyers and Cleaners in Newton Heath for many, many years. I have added this information incase there is anybody looking for these Rudyards. Hope that somebody can help.
