    1. [Pots] List Admins- List set up in our part of the Midland Counties of England
    2. Dave Ogden
    3. Hi All, Many of you who are new to the lists aren't aware of how the Rootsweb Lists are set up in the Western Midlands of England due to how they are advertised in the Lists page on Rootsweb. I'll List here mainly those that have a membership either approaching or well over 1000 subscribers (ie. those that you are more liable to receive better results) The oldest list by far is MidMarch (one of the original Rootsweb lists) which covers :- Hereford, Worcester, Gloucestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Monmouth etc., a great list for those who have ancestry that moved between counties. Staffordshire:- The second List set up following the success of MidMarch to cover the Ancient County of Stafford alone (This is a very large list with a huge amount of subscribers). Black-Country :- Another multi-County List (ie STS SAL WOR) set up solely to cover the Black Country Towns which saw so much expansion during the Industrial Revolution. The population covered in this list is huge, actually outstripping Birmingham by far Potteries :- Wholly within Staffordshire, a List to cover the Pottery Towns surrounding Stoke-On-Trent ie., Hanley, Burslem, Newcastle etc., another area that had/has a huge population. There are a number of much smaller "locality" lists with a much reduced amount of subscribers due to their nature ie., Sedgley that concentrate on a very small area to the North of Dudley. Rootsweb listowners such as Myself and Polly are only too happy to lead you in the right direction if we believe that you may be subbed to the wrong List for your researches, you only have to ask if no replies are forthcoming to a request. The only thing to remember is that we aren't at our computers 24 hours a day, and we do have days off <g> (although there are assistants in different time zones) and if we get a plethora of reqests, it may take a few days to answer. One final thing, we are unpaid volunteers and don't profess to know the answer to every query, but we are confident, that if we are stuck, someone will come up trumps eventually. I speak for myself with this, "What I know would fill a book, what I don't know would fill a library"! Good Hunting with your researches HTH Dave 8-)) Wednesbury England Listowner: Staffordhire, Black Country, Potteries etc., ps. Newer/ish Lists in the area are Worcester, Shropshire, Warwick etc., all accessed via the Rootsweb mailing List page. All are off-shoots of the original MidMarch list.

    3. Hi, I wrote a while ago asking for assistance with the family names of Brough and Waterhouse. I had some really good advice from the forum, and I wish to ask for some more help with relation to the information I have found out and if anyone has history of these names. This would be my Great Grandfathers Family on my Fathers side. In the 1881 census I found John Brough born 1857, Living in North Road Burslem, stoke-on-Trent. Living with Sarah Brough ( I presume his wife) Age 20 and a Harriet Brough age 2 months. In the 1901 census, this accumulated into: John & Sarah Brough Now living in Macclesfield Street John aged 44 Sarah aged 41 Harriet appears again age 20, also Eliza aged 19 Joseph aged 14 Harry aged 17 Gertrude aged 8 Ada aged 4 Albert E. aged 2 and Ethel V aged 2 My grandfather appeared after this lot and was born in 1904 (John (AKA Jack) Brough Other records show that John Brough died 11th July 1937 aged 80 years and Sarah died 23rd Jan 1934 aged 73 years. It is reported also that the address when she passed away was Newport street. do not know the district. If any one could shed some more light on this elusive family or any ties to it I would be most obliged. Many thanks in anticipation. David Brough Eng.Tech. AMIIE (elec.)

    3. Barbara: Mary WALTON married John WHITTINGHAM 7 June 1835. There is no clue as to Mary's family on the marriage entry and she was very uncooperative and died before the 1851 Census. On the 1841 census, she is age 25 and born in Staffordshire. The only clue I have is that on John WHITTINGHAM's brother Samuel's marriage entry, one of the witnesses is a Sarah WALTON. John WHITTINGHAM, a blue maker, died in 1852. His estate was worth over £100 so I am hoping there might be an obituary in the Staffordshire Advertiser. That's all I have, I'm afraid. 2. Andrew Crookes
    3. Hi everyone, Can I beg a lookup on the 1891 census for Staffordshire, please? I found an ancestor on the 1881 census, but he absolutely refuses to be found on the 1901 census, and after searching on FreeBMD and spending on 1837online, I know that he didn't die in England or Wales between 1881 and 1901, so am now exploring the possibility of emigration. If he did emigrate, I would like to narrow down the possible time frame, and also know if he had any children 'when' he emigrated, which is why I would really appreciate a lookup. I'm looking for Thomas Thompson Crooks. He was born in 1859 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs. In 1881 he was living with his wife, Mary at Liverpool Road, Stoke-on-Trent. I haven't been able to find any trace of him after the 1881 census. If its not too much, could I also ask for someone to lookup a Jane and Robert Crooks, both aged about 60. They would probably have been living at 140 Hope Street Hanley, or 44 Market Street, Fenton. Their son Robert Ernest should be living with them, aged about 18/19. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Colleen

    2. Edmund BRISTOW
    3. Hello all, Is any one on the list researching the Edwards family from I believe Burton on Trent. I am looking for the family of a William Edwards, who was according to the 1881 census born in Burton around 1829. On his marriage certificate, (which I have) his age is given as full and his father was also William. In 1859, (May 1st) he married Charlotte Bird in Kennington, Surrey, his occupation was coachman, and his father William was deceased. William and Charlotte had 5 children by 1881 these being, George bn c1863 Kensington, Surrey, Ada bn 16/8/1868 Kensington. William bn c1873 Lambeth, Mary bn c1875 Lambeth and Frances bn c1877 Lambeth. Ada was my wife's grandmother, she married Alfred Robert Doughty, in Kennington on the 25th Dec 1891. Nothing else is known about the rest of her family, but if anyone is interested in this line they can be found on my website the Bristow-Doughty Connection at www.footstepspast.co.uk Thanks in anticipation, Ed Bristow.
