Hello I am researching the surname Cotton in the Hanley SOT area. The only information I have is as follows, William Cotton Born 1843 Probably in Hanley .In the 1881 cencus he was living in the Shelton district of Hanley with his wife Anne Maria Cotton (nee Roberts) born 1856 in Hanley . Samuel Cotton age 3 yrs and Margaret J Cotton age 13 yrs I should think that this is William Cottons 2nd marriage as Anne Maria would have been too young to have been Margarets Mother. I have not had much luck yet tracing Williams origins, in fact you are the only one who so far seems to be looking for Cottons in the potteries, I would be most interested to hear from you although I doubt that my ancestors would have owned a pottery, as he was entered as a labourer in 1881. Perhaps we can make a link somewhere Regards Frances ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 21, 2003 4:00 AM Subject: ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES-D Digest V03 #83
Am seeking to connect with any one researching the Cotton surname for Stoke, England. It is associated with the Elijah Cotton Pottery located in Stoke. The names in which I am interested is Teddy(Theodore)Cotton, and Arthur Cotton. Both were sons of Elijah and Martha Wharton Cotton. Elijah was owner of the Lord Nelson Pottery that closed in the mid 1960's. I have no further information on these two. I do know that they maintained contact with my Grandmother, Susan Wharton Ward who was a cousin. Kind regards, Susan

Hello all, Simeon Simpson married Hannah Hall (IGI transcribed as Hale) at Bucknall cum Bagnall 22.7.1817. Known children Mary Ann (1825) and Martha (1828) both christened at Bethseda Chapel, Albion New Connection, Shelton (I G I) and Emily (1833-1877) who married William Bailey (1823-1859) of Newcastle under Lyme at St. Thomas' Church Liverpool, 24.10.1849. Their only child was my great-grandmother. Does anyone know of any other children? Hannah is reputed to have had 7 or 8 and outlived them all. Also, was Emily christened? and where? Any help appreciated, June Taylor

Anyone on the old Staffordshire list might have known me by my old Netscape or Freeserve addresses. Hello again to Norman Holt if he's on this list, also Dave Grahl and Lauren Brockman, also Joy Stacey in Oz. It is because of these three that I am back on the Potteries trail, still chasing my HUGHES family in Hanley but have just had a break through due to unearthing their past emails to me. Another success is the change over from pay per telephone call to monthly fee for my Internet, and a bigger PC. What a difference! It has opened up a new world of FH research for me. No more worrying about how long I'm on the net, and able to do more extensive research, especially on the Freebmd site. Last night I found the marriages of two of my gr-grandfather's sisters, subject to confirmation by certificate. Joy in Australia found the marriage of their brother EDWARD HUGHES to an EMILY HARVEY, in 1902, although his age is wrong by about six years and needs investigating further. He was defiantly born in 1867 and not 1836 as the marriage details suggest. What I'm after now are possible sightings of the sisters in the 1881 and 1891 census for the Shelton area. The parents were ROBERT HUGHES and MARGARET nee TAYLOR both born in BAGILLT, NORTH WALES and resident in 45 Denbigh St, Hanley in the 1881 census. The eldest daughter JANE born 1852 in Bagillt, married FREDERICK MOSTON in the first quarter of 1874 and their son Robert Hughes Moston died in Denbigh Street in 1879, so it's possible they were living in Denbigh Street in the 1881 census. For the second daughter SARAH, born 1856 in Bagillt, and living with her parents in 1881,1 there are three possible marriages. To JAMES GOODWIN or JOHN LOWNDES in 1881, or HARRY PLANT in 1890. I think Edward's wife died on 6/12/1940 as there is an entry in my G-grandfather's birthday book for that date which just says Emma Hughes, but still checking on this. Can anyone help my search, pretty please? Dorothy J (Llandudno) ==== ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES Mailing List ==== The List for the Pottery Towns of the Ancient County of Staffordshire
Have a look at the 1881 GB Census for Penzance, Cornwall. Your young Letitia is age 13 years and has more siblings. My great grandfather, Edwin CLARKE, was born in Longport, Staffs about 1837. He became a Primitive Methodist minister and hence moved a lot, but I have no idea if he was born a Methodist. I have not been able to trace either his birth or his marriage. His wife was Letitia ???, born about 1839 in Ashford Hill, Hants. Their first daughter, Letitia H. Clarke born in Poplar Middlesex about 1868. I would appreciate suggestions of how to proceed. Thanks Les Blues West Vancouver, BC Canada.
Looking for family information on Ruth LAMB, b.May 6 1853 in Kingswinford or Brierley Hill, Staffs. Our earliest sighting is from the 1881 Census: Ruth M LAMB age 28, dressmaker in Shrewsbury St Chad, Shrops. She emigrated to Victoria BC Canada about 1896, crossing from Liverpool on the ss Scotsman. We have her travel box marked with the name of the ship. In the 1901 Census of Victoria she owns a house and is living on her own means. Her wedding record (m.Frank Colley, Nov.1901) gives her parents as James & Mary Lamb. The death record (1939) shows James Lamb and Emily Barnes as parents. Thank you - this is a most interesting list to follow. Elaine Polglase

Hello. Does anyone have access to the Abbots Bromley Parish Registers? I'm trying to find out if the Richard BENNETT who married Catherine MATTHEWS at Abbots Bromley on 29th September 1783 can have come from Burslem. Is there any indication on the Register of what his geographical origin may have been, particularly if it wasn't the same parish? If he 'did' come from Burslem, then he is probably the same Richard BENNETT who later became my ggggtgrandfather. If the register doesn't say, then how can I prove whether the same man and his wife Catherine had three children (1784, 1786, 1789) in Abbots Bromley, and then five in Hanley (1792, 1794, 1797, 1799, 1802). Proof either that they were the same couple, or that they were different couples, would be equally acceptable. Any help would be welcomed. Graham --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hello everyone my interests are William Cotton born 1843 probably within the potteries area, and in 1881 living with his wife Ann Maria Cotton ( nee Roberts ) in the Shelton district of Hanley she was born 1856, William was described as a general labourer and Ann Maria as a potters sponger living with them was their son Samuel Cotton age 3 and Margaret J Cotton age 13..so presumably this was William Cottons 2nd marriage I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has a connection with any of these names. Also it isn't Cobridge church Burslem, its Christ Church, Cobridge (a place between Burslem and Hanley) - where the above couple were married! Hi Everyone. I am trying to trace a family of Brannans. Thomas born ? 1861 married Margaret Cain (of Burslem) 1879 at St Peters RC Church Cobridge, John was born in Northwich Cheshire 1884, then two more daughters born in Burslem 10? Years later. I am trying to find out whether Thomas was born in the surrounding area. All I know about his father is that he was called John and he was listed deceased on his son's marriage certificate in 1879. Regards Julie
