Hi List, Having obtained "permission" from Admin - cheers Helen! - there is a way onto the Census info on the Rutland site :) Sometimes a right click as opposed to a left click works wonders even if you do find out through hitting the wrong part of the mouse. The following should get you in:- Go in through www.rutlandfree.org then left click on the Research Databases then left click on Research Databases for Adults and finally RIGHT click and open in new window on Heritage Quest Online and the Search Census and Search Books screen comes up. Long and drawn out I know - but it's working at the moment. I don't know if we are supposed to go in this way but ............. Good Luck Regards Louise

Hi all Looking over some old e-mails I found reference to settlement examinations / certificates and removal papers. Can you explain what these are? Are they to do with the poor laws and people moving from one parish to another? If so would my ancestors have had to have them to "emmigrate" from Stoke, Salop to Tunstall, SOT circa 1840? looking forward to being educated Janet Howell www.risinsun.co.uk Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi Everyone, I am trying to find the marriage of William Coxon and Eliza Bentley, their first child was born September 1857. I believe Eliza was previously married to Eli Bentley and quite possibly Eliza's maiden name was Lees/Leese. Despite trawling through the St. Catherine's marriage index from 1850 to 1868, the IGI, free BMD etc etc I have failed to find them. Can anyone connect with this family or offer any advice on where I should look next? Regards Gordon --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hello, Is anyone researching the LEIGHS family of Endon STS? I am trying to find a lead back from the family below from the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Guildford, Surrey. I know that Henry LEIGHS had a china and glass shop in Guildford in 1839 because it is in Pigots. I am presuming that his family must have been of some standing if he was financially able to employ others, but his marriage, baptism and parentage eludes me. Any help gratefully received. 1851 Index 1594/ff488r-v Guildford St Marys Henry Leighs 42(STS...) John - You have two possibilities: Gordon Beavington in Kelowna, British Columbia, has scanned the 1851 Potteries census on to 4 CDs (for £15 sterling), and the whole of Staffordshire on to 9 CDs (£24 sterling). These are available now, but so far as I can work out, you need to open each page, which is a separate file, individually. Alternatively, you can wait until S & N Archive Data Ltd bring out their version, which will be a lot more expensive, but will allow you to move from one page of the enumerators' books to the next without the fiddle of closing it each time. The Beavington version is not indexed, so you may have a long job hunting down William and Henry Osborne. John: You might try the Staffordshire Lookup Exchange http://freespace.virgin.net/willen.hall/sts.html. There is a very kind person there who has the surname index for the 1851 Staffordshire Census. I have contacted him a couple of times and he is very quick in responding with a list of the folio numbers on which a certain surname exists. This would make Gord Beavington's CDs a lot easier to manage. Also, if you have Windows XP, the Beavington CD's are really easy, due to the "slide viewer" function. All you have to do with Windows XP is click the "next picture" button to get the next folio. They are very high quality scans and most are quite easy to read as a full page view. Happy Hunting! Another page just uploaded to the Black Country Society website. This time it a review of the latest book published by the Society. Those of you living in the West Midlands and reading either the Express and Star or Black Country Bugle may have seen details of this book already. This book may also be of interest and use to Potteries listers. This book is unique in that it is the only publication which contains the civic arms of ALL the Black Country local authorities, which existed before the reorganisation of local government in 1966. The author Peter Skidmore has carried out painstaking research into this subject, successfully finding images of some of the arms, which at first proved difficult to track down. In my opinion the book is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in the history of the Black Country. It is very informative, not only on the granting of the arms themselves, but also some of the history behind the town itself, and how the arms itself came to evolve. There are also sections on Civic Pride, the College of Arms, how to acquire civic arms, an analysis of the themes and symbols used in civic arms and a comprehensive list of the mottoes used by Black Country councils. The book's proceeds will all be ploughed back into the Society to further other Black Country causes. Details on purchasing the book are available in the article. Here is the link: http://www.the-black-country.co.uk/bcs_articles/heraldry.htm Thanks for reading Mick Pearson

Looking for connections to Frederick Hadfield born in Newcastle (1853). He appears as "Fredk" in the 1901 census of Stoke upon Trent. Thank you - Elaine Hadfield Polglase
A 2.45 p.m. today we completed scanning under licence from the P.R.O 34 Films for Staffordshire - over 37,000 JPEG images are now safely installed on 9 CDs. In 1851 the city folk liked to hire country youngsters as servants so many Staffordshire children found there way to Dudley, Worcestershire to work in service, for that reason we include at no cost a copy of the CD for Dudley in 2 of our CD offers. Staffordshire now joins Somerset, Bristol, Shropshire & Worcestershire in our 1851 Census Scans - coming up will be Birmingham and because it is part of 3 counties will we adapt the production to meet specific requests. Work on Birmingham will begin in Mid May - in the meantime to keep us out of trouble we will start Wiltshire because we have the film on hand but only on a time available basis. The Offers for Staffordshire can be found on our Web Page at http://www.mycensuses.com I am sure you will find a visit very informative and well worth the trip. Thank you to all who have made our cottage industry into such a fantastic success. Gordon Gordon W. Beavington, 560, Hemlock Road, Kelowna.B.C.
