    3. Hello List, Please excuse my posting again but would SKS do a look up in the parish records probably Christ Church for the baptism of Reuben Sherlock born in Basford 2/4 /1874. He was REGISTERED as Reueben, Son of Reuben and Mary, but I think that he called himself Daniel. I wonder if Daniel figured on his baptism either as a second name or even as his first name? TIA. Terry Brooks.

    3. Hi Jackie, I would actually like to be able to read any of the folios. I managed after great difficulty to open the Shropshire disc which contained Ashley from Staffs, but I just got file invalid from the Staffs list. Again Gordon has offered a refund but as with other listers I don't really want that , just to be able to open them up. I have tried in 'My Computer' and in Explorer and in Imageing and in Coral Photohouse all to no avail. I will have to try again but I think that I have tried all possibilities. I couldn't find some of the folios in HO 107/2008 for Leek, and on closer examination found several chunks of folios missing, along with some individual pages. Has anyone else had this sort of response from him? It is a shame as I truly believe he is doing a good service in making the censuses available at a reasonable price, but in his haste to get out as many censuses as possible he skimps on the quality control. I should add that although some of the scans are difficult to read, I don't have a problem with the quality of the scans, as I have done some census transcribing myself so am aware of the difficulties. My problem is that I have paid for something which isn't there. I would be really dissapointed if I knew that some of my family were on the missing folios, and I had bought the CD's specifically to find them. > > Hope someone can help > Thanks > Jackie Russell > > > > ==== ENG-STS-THE-POTTERIES Mailing List ==== > The List for the Pottery Towns of the Ancient County of Staffordshire >

In my case the whole of Stone RD was unreadable as it appeared the pages had been filmed at an angle. Several e-mails later I was told another CD would be sent to me. I'm still waiting 1 month later - the original CD's arrived in 5 days which included a W/E!!! 3. I too received a rather curt reply from him, I bought the census only to find that two weeks after there was a more comprehensive set, i asked what it would cost to purchace the missings discs, I was not given the opportunity to do so, just the price of the new complete set. I'm not to sure that i wou;ld use his service again. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Russell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, June 02, 2003 3:23 PM Subject: [Pots] Missing Folios from Beavington CD's > Hello list > > Has anyone who has the 1851 census for North Staffordshire from Gordon Beavington had any problems with whole batches of Folios missing? > > I recently received the 1851 name index from BMSGH, and yesterday was looking for some of my GRINDEY family on the Beavington CD's. My 3rd Great Grandfather was James Oliver (b. 1815 Hanley). He had at least 3 children, including Emma, my GGG'mother (b. 1845 Hanley). Emma's brother (first name not yet known) emigrated, also to Trenton NJ. According to my G'father, he married Hannah (surname unknown, b. 1857) "on the day they emigrated". I've looked in IGI, FreeBMD anmd StaffsBMD and found a possible marriage in Plymouth, but I don't know how likely this is due to residency regulations. There's no-one suitable on the ISTG site yet. I know that the Olivers were in Trenton by 1882 as the 1910 US census show their eldest Charles born in NJ, but they aren't in the 1880 census. I do know a bit more about their children from the 1910 census (Mr. Oliver was not on it, presumed deceased) and from information from my late Grandfather. Any help or advice on where else to look appreciated. BTW are there any web sites detailing why Potters emigrated to Trenton? BW Andy.

    2. Peter, Thanks for the tip, actually I have been in long contact with Mike and he has been of great help to me, he is a wonderful person. I am at the point in research that I was hoping to find someone who is related to one of the Mellor siblings of my grandfathers that can fill in the blanks. As you know, this is very time consuming and since I live in the states, I must depend on the generosity of those who live in England to look up things for me. I must say that everyone has been so helpful to me over there. Mike has spent much time with me researching my tree, time to give him a break. Lisa Researching Mellor/Pennington/Haywood

    3. Hi, Our Mellor was Sarah Mellor b. 1833(?) who married John Parr in Burslem. From the parish registers the Mellors appear to have had quite a lot of connection with Parrs for some time. A Mary Parr married a George Mellor in1782. The complication is that there are two Parr branches which intermarried from time to time and this George Mellor is on the other branch from the Sarah Mellor. You will perhaps receive an email from another Parr relative who is a direct descendent of the Sarah Mellor line if you don't hear from her I will pass on your email. 3. Jackie - Many potbanks had their own crate making team - My mate left school and went to be an apprentice cratemaker at Twyfords - though by that time they were using 3" square steel mess to make the crates. Several old photo books of the potts have photos of cratemakers and show what the crates looked like. Made out of willow an soaked in water to make them pliable. I remember that a crate make down Union Street in Hanley had a nice side line in making hoola hoops - that would be around 1958 ish ...... sTEVE On 27 May 2003 11:19, Jackie Russell [SMTP:[email protected]] wrote: > Hello > > My greatgrandfather Uriah YATES was a cratemaker in 1809 when he married > Ann FINNEY in Burslem. 3. Hello My greatgrandfather Uriah YATES was a cratemaker in 1809 when he married Ann FINNEY in Burslem. He was still a cratemaker in the 1851 census. 7 of his descendants were also cratemakers, until at least 1901. Did the potteries employ their own cratemakers, or did they buy the crates in? If anyone has access to any trade directories, could they please see if cratemaker is a trade and if there are any named YATES in the Burslem area. Thank you Jackie Russell

I have found a possible baptism in Astbury, Cheshire. If anyone has access to the 1861 census for Burslem I would be very grateful if they could look for him. In 1851 he was a widower living in Commercial Street with his 2 youngest daughters Paulina and Betsey. Thank you Jackie Russell
