    1. [Pots] Re: Information re: 1841 Lookup
    2. j.ankers1
    3. Hi Nina, This is not my area at all. I'm sure all this is South Staffs. area. I will not be able to help you, but with the very detailed info you have given I'm sure someone will help. If I were you, I would also subscribe to the Birmingham list, as lots of folk on there are extremely helpful, and it could be within their area.I have posted this reply to the STS list, and also to the Brum list. Hope you are lucky! Regards Jean. ----- Original Message ----- From: Anthony & Nina Czaban To: j.ankers1 Sent: Friday, July 25, 2003 5:00 PM Subject: Information re: 1841 Lookup Subject: re: 1841 Census Lookups Dear Jean: Firstly, thank you for offer to "try" to solve my mystery. The following should give you a better understanding of the William INGLEY, INGELEY, HINSLEY, HINGLEY that I am looking for (b. abt.1839) who would probably be living with his mother or with her and her family in 1841. His wife: MIDDLETON, Maria was born 13 Jan 1840, c. 09 Feb 1840 in Aldridge to Joseph MIDDLETON and wife Anne. Her siblings were John b. abt. 1829; Thomas b. about 1837; Elizabeth b. abt. 1843 and Hannah b. abt. 1846. I am aware that there are large gaps in-between the children so there may well have been more who died, but these are the ones I have on my records. This information was obtained from Sue Lote via STAFFORDSHIRE-L and is from the 1851 Census, Mill Green, Aldridge, Staffordshire. At this time the father of Maria, Joseph, farmed 12 acres. I believe that he farmed 37 acres by the 1881 census. My information indicates that Maria Middleton HINGLEY died 14 Jan 1934. (I do not have this substantiated) HINGLEY, INGLEY, HINSLEY, INGELEY William was born about 1839 in Wyrley, Stafford according to the 1881 Census Ogley Hay. (There has been some speculation as to whether this is Wyrley or Warley Wigon.) He married Maria MIDDLETON on Mar. 28, 1864 in St. Peter and St. Paul's Church Parish of Aston County of Warwick. I know that he was still living in 1911-12 from a picture with him in it that appears to have been taken around that date. The following is listed on their marriage registry: William INGLEY, 24, Bachelor, Labourer, Res. - Aston Manor, Father's name - NOT KNOWN Maria MIDDLETON, 24, Spinister, Res. - Aston Manor, Father's name - Joseph Middleton, Occupation - Farmer Witnesses were George Hadley and Elizabeth Hadley On this document, my great grandfather signed with a mark and my great grandmother signed her name. According to the entry in the IGI they were married in Aston Juxta Birmingham, Warwick, England, 28 Mar 1864. (This agrees with what I have.) Information from the 1881 Census, Ogley Hay, Lichfield Road, Stafford, England is as follows: HINSLEY, William head, 42, b. Wyrley, Stafford, Labourer HINSLEY, Maria wife, 41, Aldridge, Stafford William John HINSLEY, son, male, 16, Rowley Regis, Stafford, Engine Driver Colliery (Low) Phoebe Maria HINSLEY daughter, female, 11, Solihull, Warwick, scholar Joseph HINSLEY, son, male, 9, West Bromwich, Stafford, scholar George HINSLEY, son, male, 7, West Bromwich, Stafford, scholar Frank Edgar HINSLEY, son, male, 2 Ogley Hay, Stafford. As well, but of course not listed in this census is: Albert Thomas HINGLEY, son, male, b. 17 May 1883. 1891 Census Lookup has netted the following: William Hingley/head/marr/age 51/farmer/born Wyrley Wiggan Maria Hingley/wife/marr/age 51/born Aldridge Phoebe M/dau/single/age 21/born Warwickshire, Adcocks Green George/ son/single/age 17/born Brownhills Frank E/son/single/age 13/scholar/born Brownhills Albert T/son/single/age 8/born Brownhills, Staffs It appears that William John and Joseph are both gone from home by this time. Joseph married three years later but I don't know about William John. An aged family member thought that there was another Frank who died before this one listed above. I have not substantiated this statement although by the dates listed it is certainly a possibility. You can see the inter-change between the names INGLEY, HINSLEY, HINGLEY and even the possibility of INGELEY. I would think that from his marriage license he was listed as INGLEY so this or INGELEY would be closer to the spelling on his birth certificate. Looking for his death would probably bring out the HINSLEY or HINGLEY surname. It is family lore that my great grandfather William was a "chance child" so this would mean that we are researching the female line. As this point makes the brick wall even more formidable, I have not had much luck since locating his marriage to Maria. I feel that he was born 1839'ish from the above research. I do not know if there is a place called Wyrley in Staffordshire as per the 1881 census listed as his birth place but research has led me to believe the following---- If William's birth place is Warley Wigorn (which is closer to the spelling in the 1891 census) it is part of Oldbury, which is now part of West Bromwich and has been changed to Sandwell. Warley is now between Oldbury and Birmingham and used to be known as Smethwick. According to Family Search IGI there was a William INGELEY christened on 02 Apr 1837 Smethwick, Stafford to a Mary Anne INGELEY. This is out by two years, but........ I do not know what other single parent births are registered in this area which would fit in with the 1839'ish birthdate. (This is following through on the "chance child" rumour.) Your help is most appreciated, and I am most willing to provide anything further if I can. Nina

    1. [Pots] LEIGHS Endon China man
    2. historyresearch
    3. Hello I am totally stuck with my 2 great grandfather, Henry LEIGHS, and would welcome anything to break down this particular brick wall. I am looking for his baptism, and therefore his parents. In fact, anything. According to the 1851 and onwards censuses Henry had a thriving china and glass business in Guildford, but was born in Endon, Staffs about 1809. He married Emma DEW in Lambeth in 1838 and the china business was thriving in 1839 as it was in Pigots 1839 Guildford. This pattern of movement puzzles me. Why did he move such a distance? and why Lambeth? His father's name was John on the marriage cert, and John was also a "china man". The Guildford move I can understand because Emma was born in East Clandon, just up the road. Staffordshire records are unable to find a baptism for Henry in Endon or Leek, and it is now suspected from another family historian researching his second marriage (after 1861to an Ellen) and family in Egham, Surrey, that he may have been a Quaker. There is also a suspicion that the other LEIGHS shop (John LEIGHS, grocery) in Guildford in 1839 might have belonged to his father, or perhaps a brother. None of the censuses show up a John LEIGHS, however, so he may have died before 1841. Can anyone suggest where else I might look in Staffordshire for Henry LEIGHS' birth or baptism, or to help answer the question as to the move to Lambeth/Guildford? Or am I stuck forever? I have also posted this to the Staffordshire list so forgive me if you read it twice. Thanks Yours Vicki Turner

    3. Dave - The image numbered 4-000 has the number 381 in the top right hand corner, and the two following images (4-0000 and 4-01) have no numbers. Since image 4-02 is numbered 384, I think we must assume that the intervening ones are 382 and 383 (which, as you say, has a large number 1 in the top middle). Ann (no final -e) Sheldon appears to have been born in Cheddleton, and her son Thomas in Bagnall. 3. Hello Tony, I went to the library today, to do your look up. Yes, the 1891 census is street indexed but not surname indexed. Maddock St and Stanley St are both there next to one another. I looked through both streets and also Liverpool Rd, (all Burslem) but there's no John Bailey there. However, I noticed that there seemed to be a lot of Bailey families in that area.
