Many thanks for your query, and I will try and explain my Shenton interest. The earliest one I have in my Tree,is a Jane Shenton born in Hanley in 1854.In the 1871 Census there are just Jane and her Father living in Hanley together. Her Father is listed as a John Shenton, born in Leek in 1831.In the September Quarter of 1875,Jane marries a George Pickerill.Through the years 1881 and 1891,there appears to be a stated Son of the Couple, born in 1875 in Bucknall, by the name of JohnPickerill..I noticed in 1899 in Bucknall St Mary, the Marriage of Harriet Ann Durber, the sister of my Grandfather,to a John Shenton. In the 1901 Census the entry for John and Harriet shows John to have been born in Bucknall.Using the 1901 Census Encoder I looked everywhere of course for a matching John Pickerill but to no avail.I also looked for a matching John Shenton, but to no avail, other than the one married to Harriet. Now surely I am not adding two and two and getting seven, when I say the John Shenton born in Bucknall in 1875,was born to Jane before the occasion of her Wedding to George.I do so hope that no one has dropped off to sleep! Where were your PODMORE family from? My great great grandmother was Mary PODMORE (1813-1879) daughter of Francis Podmore and Rachel SNAPE of Sandon. You can see my PODMORE family tree online at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=anne_peat there is also a family tree of the PODMOREs of Sandon at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=:1017183 from which I have gained a great deal of information. Yes, I always though my grandmother Martha Mayer must have been German, perhaps Jewish, because all I knew about her was that she lived in Liverpool. Then I learnt the family came from Staffordshire, and when I looked on the IGI I realised how many MAYERs there were in the area. Ditto my father's family name of KINSEY. Hello William I note your interest in Shenton. I have a Marriage between Gertrude Shenton and Frederick Hugh Cork in 1909, probably in Silverdale.Gert was the daughter of William and Sarah Ann his second wife. his first was Hannah Barlow in 1880 at 'Wolstanton, I am not sure where he came from, one source said Mow Cop but this is uncertain. Just as a matter of interest but probably not relevant to you, my father used to talk about a Harry Durber, a farmer near Silverdale somewhere, this would be 1900-1920 time Best of luck Jim
Hi William, I am a real live Withinshaw. My direct line are all from the potteries back to at least my GG Gfather.. 1830 would be about the time of my G Gfather Edward (1827) who married a Sarah Sheen. I have record of two of his brothers, John and Charles Wesley. I also have a Mayer. Thirza born about 1836. I have recently found her marriage cert which has a mystery. She is entered as a spinster but her father's name is shown as Livi Garner. She is mother of my Gmother Eleanor Gray. I am interested in hearing from you. Many thanks for your response Jeanne. The earliest Mayer that I have is a Ralph Mayer who was born in Norton in 1832.He married an Edith Withinshaw, and the couple had four sons, among them a Ralph Mayer born in Norton in 1855.This Ralph Mayer married first a Maria Leek, then a Mary Thomas(nee Durber). This Mary Durber was first the wife of a William Thomas until he died.Mary was the sister of my Great-Grandfather Henry Durber, and married Ralph in 1898. Although there is the possibility that Jonathan Hancock may be a Cousin of my Hancock Family, who were born in Hanley, the Surname Hartshorne is also of interest.Harry Thomas the son of William and Mary, married a Lavinia Hartshorne, who was born in c 1878 in Burslem. However Lavinia's Father Samuel,is stated in the Census as being born in Shropshire.
