I have found an entry on the 1851 census for Southampton where a married woman, Catherine Gardner, with 2 children gives her occupation as 'pauper'. She is living at 36 Russell Street in the St Mary district. Her husband is not with her, but as he was a mariner he was most likely at sea when the census was taken. This would account for her being without financial support, but would the Southampton workhouse or poor union have supported her in any way? If so, would there be any record surviving? If so would Hampshire records office search for me if I applied to them? She and her 2 children were born in London, I don't know about her husband but on the marriage certificate they were both living in London in 1841. In 1852 she was still at 36 Russell St. when she gave birth to her 3rd child so her husband was probably based in Southampton. Any help appreciated, regards, Jeanette
Hi Jeanette If the information survives at all, it will most likely be at Southampton Archives. Unfortunately they are currently closed for refurbishment until late July, but you could try e-mailing them anyway. archives@southampton.gov.uk Good hunting, Dave Jacobs ==================== At 17:08 27/06/2004, Jeanette Tipping wrote: >I have found an entry on the 1851 census for Southampton where a >married woman, Catherine Gardner, with 2 children gives her occupation >as 'pauper'.
