Dear Derrick I can't help you myself right now, but there are local places who can! You don't say exactly how you know your Frederick was a Southampton resident, and was born in 1862, but I expect you have researched this enough to be sure. I'm surprised in that case that you failed to find Fred's birth registration at the Family Records Centre, and I would think it more likely that he was recorded under a slightly different spelling of his name, or in another year, than that his birth was not registered at all. The local studies contact point (see below) at Southampton Library will be able to check his appearance in the 1871 census for example. You have him in 1891, and no doubt in 1881 as well, but you don't mention 1901. I only ask in order to know roughly when he might have died. Local studies can also find him in local Directories. To find his burial, if it was in a Southampton Cemetery, you should ask Southampton Bereavement Services - contact point also given below. If he was buried here, they should be able to give you the date and place of burial, his age and address at the time. Unfortunately Southampton Archives Dept is currently closed for refurbishment until late July, otherwise one could look in their master card index to see if Fred's baptism was recorded in a Southampton church. The staff may nevertheless have access to their holdings, so it would be worth asking them, at city.archives@southampton.gov.uk The information below is from the Official Southampton Site: http://www.southampton.gov.uk/citylife/councilservices.htm Cheers, Dave Jacobs ================ Bereavement Services Provision and operation of cemeteries and Crematorium. Local Studies Collection The Local Studies Collection brings every aspect of Southampton life and history alive. Contemporary material e.g. local policy documents, Council minutes and modern large-scale <http://www.southampton.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/information/special//leisure/libraries/information/special/the-southampton-library-map-collection.asp>maps rub shoulders with standard histories and works on the local architecture and environment, our industrial heritage & prominent figures The collection`s core is material on the city and its environs, however coverage extends to South-West Hampshire and includes background material on the county as a whole. Much of our information is in the form of pamphlets, illustrations, maps and periodicals. Our file of local newspapers, which date back to 1772, makes fascinating reading, and is supplemented by an invaluable cuttings collection, started in 1939 and still added to daily. Of particular interest to family historians will be Southampton Census returns 1841-1891, transcripts of selected local parish registers and a collection of street directories spanning the 1790s to the 1970s.To find out more look here <http://www.southampton.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/information/special//leisure/libraries/information/special/the-southampton-library-local-history-collection.asp>Local studies Collection The Special Collections Library runs two outreach programmes to support your local studies collection. * The <http://www.southampton.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/information/special//leisure/libraries/information/special/local-history-forum.asp>LocalHistory Forum supports those active or interested in all aspects of the city and its surroundings through regular meetings and occasional visits. * The <http://www.southampton.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/information/special//leisure/libraries/information/special/the-southampton-library-family-collection.asp>FamilyHistory Club meets monthly to enable the sharing of genealogical experience between those researching family histories. Maritime History Our long history is interwoven with the sea and, although national in remit, the Maritime Collection features many works on ships with strong Southampton connections. The ill-fated Titanic, whose tragic loss had such an impact on the town, is particularly well documented. The total Collection, however, offers much more to the maritime enthusiast or researcher - material on shipping lines, emigration, marine engineering, ship design & voyages, complements major runs of maritime periodicals, yearbooks & registers, many of which bear the famous names of LLoyds and Jane`s.
