    1. Still the BLAKEs
    2. Elenor Ross
    3. Hello Dave and all, I am currently feeling very happy about having found my Hannah Blake and her children ages 2 months (my gr grandmother) 2 yrs (James) and 4 yrs (Samuel) in the 1841 census (which I have) of St Mary, Southampton. I wanted to let you know this, DAve, as you did so much work for me earlier on this family. You may recall you found Samuel Blake, 14, visitor with James Hurdle in the 1851 census for me and we wondered about who he was and what was the relationship if any. For those who don't know, James Hurdle is named as my gr grandmother's father on her marriage entry. I haven't been able to locate birth entries for any of these children through freebmd or 1837 on line. Though I think Dave that you did look in Parish Registers for me earlier, I'd like to take one more stab at that if someone could suggest who to contact. I believe but am not absolutely positive that they were Church of England. And as well DAve I wanted to let you know we have now got Hannah's death certificate. She died Hannah Blake, March 24, 1871 in Freemantle at Trafalgar Rd just before the census was taken. So is Southampton Bereavement Services the place to enquire about her burial? Thanks, Eleanor in B. C. Canada

    1. Hampshire Genealogical Society
    2. Hello All This is aimed at HGS members based in the UK and indeed, non-members who may wish to join and participate in the local family history group. There are a number of vacancies on the Committee and also some of the voluntary jobs that need the enthusiastic input that has been so evident within the Society for many years. Our Chairman,Ron Hall, has indicated he will be stepping down at the AGM in September 2004 and in addition, a replacement Treasurer to succeed Roger Smith will be required at the same time. There are a number of admin roles at the Cosham Office to be filled (although living in the Portsmouth area would be an advantage). Help is needed with the collation of genealogical sources, the HFH Journal indexing. Project Co-ordinator, Dolina Clarke, who amongst other duties looks after the vitally important transcription projects undertaken by the Society. If you can help, email either chairman@hgs-online.org.uk OR secretary@hgs-online.org.uk for further details Thanks in anticipation Tony Knight Publicity Officer HGS Web Site: www.hgs-online.org.uk

    3. I would like to send a big thank you to listers who have recommended contacting Southampton Bereavement Services. I e-mailed them in the wee small hours yesterday, and received a very helpful reply today. This is their response to my query about John James HART, and you can see how much detail it contains. "John James Hart and Mary Ann Hart (presumably his wife) were buried in grave A8/276 at Hollybrook Cemetery Southampton. There is a headstone and kerbset on the grave. The details are: John James Hart, buried aged 74 on 02/08/1927. He died on 28/07/1927 at 'Rosedale' Harcourt Road, Mary Ann Hart, buried aged 86 on 28/09/1946. She died on 25/09/1946 at North Lodge, Efford Park, Everton near Lymington, Hants. Home address as above." Unfortunately, it still leaves me in the dark as to John James HART's date and place of birth, and he does not appear on 1837online. I would definitely recommend contacting Southampton Bereavement Services if you would like information on an ancestor's grave. At least I now have a family grave to visit when I travel to England later this year. Judy Mills, Toronto --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I presume it doesn't say 'formerly' anything, so it looks as though COCKING was her maiden name. I also presume Caroline was the informant, and Francis was not present to claim fatherhood. Who does it give as the father? Have you looked for the marriage of Francis Wellman within the nine months before the child's birth? ==== >He was born at Salisbury, but mothers address was given as Millbrook, >Southampton. == I presume the registration was in the Salisbury (or perhaps Alderbury) Registration District? The registration is supposed to be in the same district as the birth. ==== >Also, he was born 26th Feb but the birth was not registered until 15th >April, so slightly more than the normal six weeks or was the law different >then? == When was 'then' by the way? I can't see the year. It has always been six weeks for a birth; having to travel back to the birth district might have contributed to the delay although depending on the date there was probably a good rail service between Millbrook and Salisbury. ==== Cheers, Dave Jacobs

    3. I wonder if someone can help me understand a birth certificate I have just received. I sent for it for the birth of a great uncle so as to try and establish the date of marriage of my great grandparents. He was obviously married twice as the eldest child was only a year older than my great grandmother. The certificate I have just received says mother Caroline COCKING now the wife of Francis WELLMAN does"now the wife" mean that she was not his wife when the child was born. He was born at Salisbury, but mothers address was given as Millbrook, Southampton. Also, he was born 26th Feb but the birth was not registered until 15th April, so slightly more than the normal six weeks or was the law different then? 3. Derrick Saw your posting on ENG-SOUTHAMPTON list ref Clovelly Road. Had a look in our Kellys Southampton Directory for 1914-1915 but nobody list in Clovelly Road under Wiltshire at that time. But I did find these which may be of use to you, the one in Bevois Valley Road is not far away from Clovelly Road. Also there was a chimney sweep in Totton with the name of WILTSHIRE, he used to drive round in a little blue three wheeled van, that was converted from a motorcycle. 1. Frederick WILTSHIRE of Southampton
    2. Dave Jacobs
    3. Dear Derrick I can't help you myself right now, but there are local places who can! You don't say exactly how you know your Frederick was a Southampton resident, and was born in 1862, but I expect you have researched this enough to be sure. I'm surprised in that case that you failed to find Fred's birth registration at the Family Records Centre, and I would think it more likely that he was recorded under a slightly different spelling of his name, or in another year, than that his birth was not registered at all. The local studies contact point (see below) at Southampton Library will be able to check his appearance in the 1871 census for example. You have him in 1891, and no doubt in 1881 as well, but you don't mention 1901. I only ask in order to know roughly when he might have died. Local studies can also find him in local Directories. To find his burial, if it was in a Southampton Cemetery, you should ask Southampton Bereavement Services - contact point also given below. If he was buried here, they should be able to give you the date and place of burial, his age and address at the time. Unfortunately Southampton Archives Dept is currently closed for refurbishment until late July, otherwise one could look in their master card index to see if Fred's baptism was recorded in a Southampton church. The staff may nevertheless have access to their holdings, so it would be worth asking them, at city.archives@southampton.gov.uk The information below is from the Official Southampton Site: http://www.southampton.gov.uk/citylife/councilservices.htm Cheers, Dave Jacobs ================ Bereavement Services Provision and operation of cemeteries and Crematorium. Contemporary material e.g. local policy documents, Council minutes and modern large-scale <http://www.southampton.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/information/special//leisure/libraries/information/special/the-southampton-library-map-collection.asp>maps rub shoulders with standard histories and works on the local architecture and environment, our industrial heritage & prominent figures The collection`s core is material on the city and its environs, however coverage extends to South-West Hampshire and includes background material on the county as a whole. Much of our information is in the form of pamphlets, illustrations, maps and periodicals. Our file of local newspapers, which date back to 1772, makes fascinating reading, and is supplemented by an invaluable cuttings collection, started in 1939 and still added to daily. The ill-fated Titanic, whose tragic loss had such an impact on the town, is particularly well documented.
