I have a copy of a marriage registration that is not part of my research, which I can scan and email to anyone that is interested. The marriage took place 4 Oct 1898 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Douglas between George INGLIS, 26 years, bachelor, engineer, from Southampton, England and Elizabeth NIVISON, 25 years, spinster, from Douglas. Pat Mission, B.C.

We are thinking of adding a new section to our website Southern Life(UK) which is to be centred on school photoghraphs as the ones we have on the village pages seem to be very popular. If anyone has any old school photographs they would like to share with others then please contact us before sending them on. If you can add a text file with the names of the people you can remember on the photo and where they are positioned then all the better. We must stress though they are to be HAMPSHIRE schools only as others would need a new website!! For those who do not know about our website, it is the history of about 2,000 villages in Hampshire and the counties that surround it including the Isle of Wight, history of parish churches, famous people and places as well as hundreds of other items of interest to genealogists and those with links to Hampshire. Over 2,400 photographs both new and old. Hi, Karen, There is a booklet called "The Country Houses of Southampton" by Jessica Vale, which should be available at the Civic Centre library, and which has some info about it, summarised as: - 238 acres, built in the late 1840s for Sir Edward Butler, at one time the chairman of the Southampton and Salisbury Railway Company - bought c1887 by Edwin Jones, founder of Southampton drapery store (the present Debenhams store used to be called Edwin Jones) - gutted by fire in 1915, at that time the home of the widow of Edwin Jones; not rebuilt - the estate sold in 1917, and developed in the late 1940s Hope this helps. Hi Karen My daughter attended Woodlands community school, where she took part in a project that resulted in a book being written called 'Harefield a hidden heritage'. I'm actually a regular visitor to Harefield Juns & will be there on Monday morning. If you'd like to e-mail me off list, maybe we can meet in reception & you'd be welcome to borrow or copy the book. Best wishes Debbie >-- Original Message -- >From: Likesgenealogy@aol.com >Date: Sat, 10 Jul 2004 03:31:25 EDT >To: ENG-SOUTHAMPTON-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [ENG-SOU] Harefield House, Bitterne > > >Hi folks >Does anyone know anything about Harefield House, the ruins of the house are > >in the grounds of the Infant and junior schools on Yeovil Chase? BBC Television - Family History Series BBC 4 is making a television series featuring people looking into their family history. This series will compliment the BBC 2 series you might have already heard about - but while BBC 2 is featuring celebrities, we're looking for 'ordinary people' with an interesting family history story to tell: If tracing your family tree has changed your life then we would really like to hear from you: perhaps you've made unexpected, startling or extraordinary discoveries while searching for your ancestors? Or are you involved in an ongoing search to uncover your roots? If you have an interesting family story to tell, please contact Emma Parkins on 020 8752 6179 or by email - emma.parkins@bbc.co.uk All conversations are at this stage for research purposes only and are in confidence of course. I look forward to hearing from you. Hi Jeanette If the information survives at all, it will most likely be at Southampton Archives. Unfortunately they are currently closed for refurbishment until late July, but you could try e-mailing them anyway. archives@southampton.gov.uk Good hunting, Dave Jacobs ==================== At 17:08 27/06/2004, Jeanette Tipping wrote: >I have found an entry on the 1851 census for Southampton where a >married woman, Catherine Gardner, with 2 children gives her occupation >as 'pauper'. I have found an entry on the 1851 census for Southampton where a married woman, Catherine Gardner, with 2 children gives her occupation as 'pauper'. She is living at 36 Russell Street in the St Mary district. Her husband is not with her, but as he was a mariner he was most likely at sea when the census was taken. This would account for her being without financial support, but would the Southampton workhouse or poor union have supported her in any way? If so, would there be any record surviving? If so would Hampshire records office search for me if I applied to them? She and her 2 children were born in London, I don't know about her husband but on the marriage certificate they were both living in London in 1841. In 1852 she was still at 36 Russell St. when she gave birth to her 3rd child so her husband was probably based in Southampton. Any help appreciated, regards, Jeanette
