A good way to start the new year David. My interest is in any references to the LON family. The first date I have is for William and his father Peter LON in 1868 when William married Emily Miller at St Marys, Southampton. The 1881 census shows William as a Naturalised British Subject and the master of the vessel Sibl at Southampton. He died in 1888. Any further leads would be much appreciated. Good morning all My interests in Southampton concern the PORTER and PLOWMAN families. I have John PORTER (b 1812- father John PORTER- mother unknown) married Ann PLOWMAN in June 1838 (b 1808 in Marnhull Dorset- father George PLOWMAN, cordwainer). John and Ann had four sons, Frederick,(b 1842) John Henry (b 1845) George James ( b 1847) and Edward (b 1849- my great great grandfather) and a daughter, Jane (b 1840) were all born in Southampton. John PORTER had been married before as the marriage certificate shows him as being a widower, but I have been unable to find any further information on this. John PORTER had an ironmonger's business that was on Lower East Road (1859)and at 110 East St (1867 to 1878). I would love to hear from anyone who has any further information, or can suggest some way of furthering my knowledge of the PORTER family in particular- I have some knowledge of the ancestors of Ann PLOWMAN, but with John PORTER being such a common name, have been unable to get any further with my research. Thank you for this opportunity Regards Anne Boyanup WA 6237
Good thinking Dave - and a happy new year to you and the list. My interests are GULLIVER - I have them back to the early 1800s when they were living in Sussex but I would love to hear from anyone researching other branches of the family. The main family was based in Millbrook in 1880 and whilst I have my direct line and one other, I have no details on any other lines. Regards Martin
In response to Dave's request here are my Southampton and surrounding area interests: BLUNDELL HAYSOM PEARCE Any instances would be much appreciated. I have a good deal of information already and am willing to share and help other researchers. Colyn.
Happy New Year Everyone My intersts are BEASLEY,HICKMAN and PENNY in Southampton,my husband Ivor's family.I would love to hear from anyone with the same connections. Regards Valerie
Following Dave's suggestion, these are my interests: I am interested in HEATHER in or around Totton/Bitterne 1900 onwards. I think my lot started in Chichester, then went to Guildford and a few went on to Southampton. Has anyone any interest in or knowledge of any of these: William HEATHER, born abt 1850 Chichester, Sussex, England, Silversmith Clothier Elizabeth HEATHER, born abt 1854, Guildford, Surrey, England Percy W.J. HEATHER, born abt 1875, Guildford, Surrey, England Harry V. HEATHER, born abt 1876, Guildford, Surrey, England Archibald J. HEATHER, born abt 1880, Guildford, Surrey, England Certainly Harry and Archie ended up in the Southampton area. Harry, aka Podger, was a watchmaker, in Bitterne I think Archie served as a steward on the White Star Line and successors. Thanks, John Parker Romsey, Hampshire, England E-mail: ParkerFamHist@aol.com
Hello subscribers, and a good new year to you all. Why don't we give a kick-start to our currently quiet list by each resolving to send a new message. It seems to me there are three reasons for having subscribed: 1: you hope to make contact with someone else already researching your Southampton ancestors. 2: you need to find out more about known ancestors, and perhaps find even earlier ones. 3: you want to find out more about the Southampton where your ancestors lived. 4: you are able and willing to give help and advice to people in categories 2 and 3. But first, despite the odds being against you, would all those hoping to contact others with similar ancestral interests please write to the list with brief details? Thanks. When that mighty rush is over, I'll invite category 2 members to write in, and so on. Cheers and good hunting. Hi again Michelle - The notice you were looking for was published in the Echo of Thursday December 30th. There were in fact two separate entries, from different family groups. You will no doubr find them on the Echo's web site, but if you'd like a scanned copy of the entries as printed I'll happily do that for you and attach it to an e-mail. As for family history clues, the first says: = CHAMMEN Marjorie Late of Howard Close Passed away suddenly on December 25th 2004 A much loved mother of Sheila, nan of Kevin and Sue Great grandmother of Ben, Rebekah and Amber ... plus funeral details, Jan 6 at Southampton Crematorium == The other says: = CHAMMEN Marjorie Evelyn (nee ROOD) Died Christmas Day 2004, aged 95 Mother of Julie, nan of Jane, Mary and Julie, great grandma of Laura and Robin ================ Tell me if you'd like the scan, so you won't think it an apparently unsolicited one! Cheers, Dave Jacobs ====================================================== Hi Michelle I realised that you wanted a copy of the death announcement in the local paper, and as we get the Echo every day I was going to look out for it. You will realise that there has been no paper over Chrstmas, and the office will only have opened today (if then, I'm not sure if there's a paper today as Mon and Tues are supposedly Bank holidays in lieu of Christmas Day and Boxing Day). Even when the family get round to it, and not everybody does, it may take a couple of days more to work through the backlog. Anyway, as Tony has pointed out, you can look at the daily announcements for yourself, so here's hoping there's a lot of genealogical info in it when it comes. Hello, There was an Echo yesterday (Mon 27th), but there was no notice in it. I don't get the Echo everyday (probably will not today) but I'll also keep an eye open for the notice when I do get a copy. Hi everyone, I know this is not a Southampton question but does have to do with family who lived in Southampton. In searching for records -whether census, BMD or otherwise for the Isle of Wight, will I find them included in Hampshire records - generally speaking? Many thanks. My search for my DREW family who lived in Southampton for years has led me back to the Isle of Wight. Eleanor, B. C. Canada
I have just been informed that a distant relative Marjorie Evelyn Chammen nee Rood, passed away on the 25 Dec 2004 in Southampton, age 95. It appears that Michelle is after a copy of the newspaper obituary , not the death certificate. The Southampton Echo announcements can be viewed at http://www.thisissouthampton.co.uk/hampshire/southampton/announcements/ but as yet Marjorie's announcement has not appeared but may do in the next few days.
