    1. COX and BENDELL- Sholing/Freemantle 1890's
    2. Ali Hargreaves
    3. Happy Easter to everyone, hope there's not too much "truffling" (of chocolate) going on out there.... If there is - enjoy!! Is there anyone else out there researching the surname of COX? I'm particularly looking for anyone who might be connected with the family of Dorothy Violet Selina COX, born Oct 1895. On the 1901 census, Dorothy (aka Dolly) was living at 25 Norman Road, Freemantle with her mother Edith (aged 28) and siblings Daisey (sic), Percival and Ivy (aged 8, 2 and 1). I know that Dorothy had other siblings called Florence, Gladys, Queenie, May, Susy, Tommy and Harold. Were these children younger, hence not showing on the census? Where was Mr COX? Dorothy went on to marry Ernest Richard BENDELL (born Sep Qtr 1896 - South Stoneham) in 1921 - and I would like to know a more about his family. By complete coincidence, my Gt Gt Grandfather William Henry GARLAND and his family were living at 4 Norman Road, Freemantle - I wonder if the families knew each other at all. One of William's granddaughters - Edna Joyce GARLAND - went on to marry the son of Dorothy and Ernest BENDELL- Francis (Ern) BENDELL - but not until 1946!! I'd be grateful to hear from anyone researching these particular families. Thanks and Regards Alison Hargreaves, Swindon, UK --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. KUNTZE: South Western Hotel and Turk's Head P.H.
    2. Lynn Karen
    3. During the early part of the 20th Century, Frank and Caroline KUNTZE managed the South Western Hotel in Canute Road, Southampton. I have them recorded there in 1901 and 1902 - but don't know exactly when they arrived there and when they left. Maybe someone can provide some additional bits of information. The 1901 Census records the family at the South Western Hotel, Terminus Terrace and Canute Road: KUNTZE, Frank; Head; 52; born Germany N B Subj; Hotel Manager; Employer, Working at Home KUNTZE, Caroline; Wife; 45; born Birmingham; Manageress; Employer, Working at Home KUNTZE, Pauline; Daughter; 19; born Birmingham; Storekeeper; Working at Home KUNTZE, Hermann; Son; 17; born Birmingham; Clerk; Working at Home Kelly's 1902 directory also records Frank KUNTZE as manager at the South Western Hotel. Pauline Louise KUNTZE married Percy Vincent BOWYER on 22 February 1906, and we have a photograph of a most magnificent wedding cake, which was apparently made in the kitchens of the South Western Hotel - but was Pauline's father still manager or did he just still have contacts there? Frank had died by 1911, when Kelly's records Mrs KUNTZE living at Ashlett, Church Lane, Highfield. Frank and Caroline married in Aston, Birmingham - and their children were both born there - but I don't know when they first came to Southampton. Does the surname KUNTZE occur in the 1891 Census index for Southampton (or indeed for anywhere else)? Intriguingly, the 1895 Kelly's records a Carl KUNTZE at the Turk's Head Public House, 1 West Street, Southampton. Is Carl a misprint/mistranscription of Caroline - or is this another Kuntze entirely? It's not a particularly common name, although the 1881 Census index does include other Kuntze families in the UK (but frustratingly I can't find Frank and the 7+ months' pregnant Caroline - Pauline was born on 22 May 1881). It's also not unknown for Kellys to get things wrong: the 1911 edition records Percy Ernest BOWYER, auctioneer. The future Mayor of Southampton (and husband of Pauline Louise KUNTZE mentioned above) was actually Percy Vincent BOWYER. Does anyone know any other way of checking the proprietor of the Turk's Head (directories for other years adjacent to 1895, other records)? Many thanks in anticipation of any help, or pointers for me to follow up. Karen

    3. Dear Roger I am sure there are people on this List who can be of help to you. However, I am not sure from this note whether: 1: You are just keeping us informed as to the state of your research, or 2: You are hoping someone else has researched your family and will get in touch with you telling you all you want to know, or 3: You would like some assistance in looking up records or obtaining certificates, or 4: You might appreciate some advice as to what to do next. Whichever it is, why not try being more direct? |You could get results. 1. [ENG-SOU] National Roll of the Great War (Southampton)
    2. Sandra J Smith
    3. I sent this to David off-list, meaning to publish it on the list: The National Roll of the Great War, Section IV (Southampton) is an extremely useful book (I have two copies of it!). Both my grandfathers and a number of great uncles appear in it. The entries were by subscription and I think 16 volumes were produced after WW1, however the project ran out of money before it was completed. It is extremely useful in that it includes a "potted" history of anyone who was engaged on "war-work" and not just a record of those who perished. However, I have found that it does have a number of errors in the potted histories. For example, both my grandfathers were stated as "volunteering in 1914", when in fact both of them had already been in the Royal Navy for a number of years. The entry for one grandfather, Leonard Charles Mabey, is: He volunteered in August 1914 and served on board HMS Vindictive on the high seas. He cruised to South America, Russia and France, engaged on important duties and later was transferred to "P16" on which vessel he served until his demobiliosation in February 1919. He holds the 1914-1915 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals. Living at 42 Malmesbury Rd, Shirley Southampton. I dont mind doing the odd look-up for people, but please dont ask for blanket seraches - I dont have a lot of spare time. Regards Sandra
