    1. RE: [ENG-SOU] Re Directories & Electoral Rolls
    2. Chris & Caroline
    3. Hi Sue In the 1914-15 Kellys for Southampton 236 Southampton Road Eastleigh was occupied by Edward HARRIS "Roydon" is a house name and I am sure I have seen that somewhere but without a street name there is nothing anyone can do to give you more information. The list has been quiet for a while, this is probably down to the bank holidays we have just had and the fine weather that WAS here and caused everybody to emigrate to the beach!! We find the same on our own list Hampshire Life especially this time of year as people start going away for their holidays. Hampshire is another list that is strictly for genealogy only and the other list is ENG-HAMPSHIRE but I belive this one is also quiet. The ENG-SOUTHAMPTON list is solely for people researching in the city and its suburbs. 1. JAMESON - Shetland Is, SCT - Sunderland, ENG - Southampton, ENG - 1850-1901
    2. Barbara P Jameson
    3. Looking for descendants of Andrew R JAMESON, born 1856 Yell, SHI, SCT. Andrew's parents moved to Sunderland, ENG about 1860-1862. Andrew's next younger brother, Thomas, was my husband's grandfather. Thomas, one of his younger brothers, James, and their mother came to the USA between 1881 and about 1886. Their father had died in the 1870s. As far as I know the rest of the family remained in England or Scotland. They were sister Mary, and brothers Andrew, Charles and William. Andrew worked as an Iron ship plater in 1901. His son, George looks to have been an iron ship riveter and son James was an apprentice plater. Andrew worked in a ship yard in Sunderland,as had his father. The family lived at 1 Alma Road in 1901. The "family story" is that Andrew had 22 children and that this family was in touch with the JAMESONs in the US until about 1930 or later. Andrew (real name Robert Andrew, but he called himself Andrew R) married a woman from Woolston named Fannie C (last name unknown) about 1880. They had at least ten children by the time of the 1901 census. They were: Andrew, George, Amelia, James, Alfred, Charles, Fanny, Hilda, Lillian and Ernest. Mother Fanny was 39 at that time, so she could have had several more children, but I don't see how she could have been the mother of 22 by the time she finished having children. Andrew must have married twice. The eldest child, Andrew hasn't been found in the 1901 census yet, but Amelia was "in training" in a facility in Winchester, St John during this census. We do hope it wasn't a Magdalene Sisters facility, but would appreciate knowing if was. We really do need some new "Cuzzins" here. I will share all the information that I have about all the family on this side of the pond. There is lots ! Thanks. Barbara Jameson marksnana@juno.com in Colorado, USA

    3. Dear Sue This is certainly a very quiet list. I have seen this request a number of times, and I think the problem is that Eastleigh is not, and has never been, part of Southampton, although it is near, like Eling (C & C!) This web site might possibly lead you to the help you need: http://www.hants.gov.uk/library/localstudies/eastleigh.html You might also try Southampton Local Studies, email local.studies@southampton.gov.uk for Directory info, and Southampton Archives, city.archives@southampton.gov.uk for Voters Lists before 1932 You could also ask the Hampshire Record Office sadeax@hants.gov.uk Good hunting, Dave Jacobs ==================== At 04:59 10/05/2004, you wrote: >Dear Listers > >I have been on the Southampton list for a couple of weeks now and have >received very few list e-mails. 2. Kylie Veale
    3. Fellow genealogists, Have you ever used the Internet to learn about genealogy methods and resources? Taken a genealogy course online? Read some 'how to' articles? Then I would like to hear from you. I am an Australian Ph.D. student who is currently writing a book chapter for an academic Virtual Learning Environment publication - my chapter is about using the Internet for genealogical education. I would therefore love to hear from you, fellow genealogists, about any Internet-based content you've used for genealogy education. This includes online courses (free or fee), how-to's, articles/columns, newsgroups, BBS, chat, mailing lists, forums, or even personal web pages that publish learning material - anything online that helps you in learning the craft of genealogy. Your comments on the following is of utmost interest: What are your favourite learning outlets on the Internet? How often do you use them? Can or did you find what you needed online? What are your learning successes? What could be better? What do you look for in genealogical learning on the Internet? If you would like to participate, your comments are extremely welcome. Please send your comments to me directly at research@veale.com.au before Saturday 1st May 2004. I thank you in advance for your participation in this academic research. Kylie Veale P.S. 1. Re Address in Eastleigh and Southampton 1904 &1914
    2. David Sharman
    3. Dear Listers Is SKS able to help me with finding out who was living at 236 Southampton Rd, Eastleigh c1904. This is the address that was given on the death certificate of my great great grandmother, Elizabeth DRAKE, when she died there 10 May 1904. I can not think of a reason why she would be living in this area. Elizabeth was born at Weymouth, Dorset and lived there and then on Portland till at least 1895. Her husband died at Portland in 1886. The informant on Elizabeth's death certificate was her daughter who was present at the death and her address is given as Royal Albert Docks, London. On the 1901 census, Elizabeth aged 85 years is living with a son in London and 236 Southampton Rd, Eastleigh is shown as uninhabited. I also have a postcard that was written by a grandson of Elizabeth and this was sent from "Roydon" Southampton on the 13 Feb 1914. He was from New Zealand and on leave, during World War 1. He writes about going down to Weymouth and Portland but does not say who he is staying with at Southampton. It makes me think that there are relations still in this area and I can't work out who they could be. Are there any directories or electoral rolls for the period that would help me?
