I've been poring over some of my brick-walls this week. One of these concerns my FARMER ancestry, and, as I know there are oodles of FARMER descendents out there, I'm hoping that someone on the list may have the answer I seek! George FARMER was my 4G Grandfather. He was bap 25 Mar 1796 at Treborough, Somerset, son of James FARMER and Mary nee HOLE. George FARMER married a Mary HEMBURROW on 01 Oct 1816 at Luxborough, Somerset (witnesses James HOLE and John WEBBER). According to the 1841 census, Mary HEMBURROW was born in Somerset, sometime circa 1796-1801; according to the 1851 census, Mary had been born circa 1797/1798 at Morebath, Devon, while according to the 1861 census, she had been born circa 1796/1797 at Bampton, Devon. Does anyone have Mary HEMBURROW's baptism/birth details? I'm pretty sure she wasn't baptised at Bampton as these baptisms are online (in Genuki Devon). As I'm currently housebound, a trip to the Devon Record Office regretfully isn't on the cards, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that some kind soul already has the details I need. And, of course, if anyone ties into the above family, I'm always more than happy to share the info I *do* have! Ever hopeful, Sue Hembury-Kellow
Hi Sue As nee means born, perhaps you are looking for the wrong name. Could she have been born Mary Hole, married a Hemburrow and was Mary Hemburrow widow on her marriage. That would explain James Hole (brother?, father? other relative) as witness at the wedding. Hi Jill, Ah - I think you've confused the two Marys! <grin> Mary HOLE (1759-1803) was the mother of George FARMER - Mary HOLE married James HOLE in 1780 at Treborough, Somerset, and they had my George FARMER in 1796, Treborough. The lady I am actually looking for is Mary HOLE's daughter-in-law, Mary HEMBURROW, who married George FARMER in 1816 in Luxborough, Somerset. I guess Mary HEMBURROW was born circa 1797, probably at Morebath. I don't think she was a widow, as the Luxborough parish register tended to mention such things, and the entry merely mentioned the usual: ie. names and date. Hi, Devon Family History Society has an index to marriages in the county 1754-1812 and 1813-1837 , and there are 2 Hemburrow marriages in both these periods and further 5 baptisms same name 1813-1839 both of which you might find useful to get as printouts if you go to the DFHS . From Somerset RO online catalogue there is a will for a William Hembrow of Stoke St Gregory dated 1873 , and a record in 1684 of a Joseph Hemburrow of North Curry , and the same date of a Thomas Hemburrow of Stoke St Gregory .From the NA there are four Hemburrow soldiers medal cards of the 1st WW . Not the most populous name and you may need to ask DRO for a search of the Morebath registers . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "SusanKellow" <ksusan1999@gmail.com> To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 10, 2013 4:16 PM Subject: [ENG-SOM] FARMER and HEMBURROW family > I've been poring over some of my brick-walls this week. Hi, Thanks for that. Yes, the name isn't very numerous. There were a few at Wiveliscombe, and, intriguingly, there were also a couple of men born in the area in question: Robert HEMBORROW, b. circa 1793, Exbridge/Brushford (depending upon which census you believe), and William HEMBURROW, b. circa 1787, Morebath/Exbridge; d. 1876, Wiveliscombe. The latter married Susan HAGLEY on 06 Jan 1842 at Wiveliscombe, when he gave his father as "John HEMBRO, labourer". Morebath, Exebridge and Bampton are set in a triangle, with each only about 2 miles apart, so I think it likely that the above chaps are brothers of my Mary HEMBURROW; but, as you say, I'll probably have to go the DRO for a search of the Morebath registers to be sure. As there are so many descendents of George FARMER and Mary HEMBURROW, I was being optimistic, and hoping that someone already had the info I needed! Re: the Stoke St Gregory and North Curry HEMBURROWs (still there, though usually spelt as HEMBROW these days), I don't think these are immediately connected. Likewise, there are a number of HEMBURYs in the Wedmore area of Somerset (my maternal grandfather was, coincidentally, one of these!) but I doubt that there is a connection. Many thanks for your kind and helpful email.
