Hello Listers I have a Henry CURRY who was born on the 4th September, 1841 in Yeovil according to his migration record to Australia in 1857. His mother was dead by 1857 and her name was Ann CURRY. His father was Henry who by this time was in Milburn, I expect in Cumbria. I presume his Birth Registration is the only one for this date on Free BMD:- Births Sep 1841 CURRY Henry Caleb Taunton 10 431 I cannot find a Marriage for his parents Henry CURRY and Ann on Free BMD so they must have married before September 1837. Has anyone any CURRY marriages locally that may fit. Many thanks Jill Forster Sydney, Australia
Jill, Have a look at 1851 census for ages and birthplaces of parents. That should provide some clues. As a starting point marriages took place around age 21 in the parish of the bride. So that would be the first place I'd look. I'd then go back to 1841 and use ages of other children to judge a possible marriage date. 1841 won't give birthplaces, but it will tell you if born in or out of county. You might also tick the phonetic spelling box in FreeBMD for variants like Currey. Peter
Jill, I can see the original image on Ancestry that gives his parents. But, the only Henry and Anne Curry combination that I can see in 1841 census, already have a son Henry aged 20. And in 1851, I can't find a Henry b1841 born in Somerset with father Henry. The only death I can find in Somerset for Anne Curry is Jun 1845 at Wellington. So it's possible her husband remarried. Interestingly, the migration record also shows an uncle Henry Foote living at Campbelltown. His wife would be a sister to one of Henry's parents. Have you tried tracing them? I'm not sure about his father moving from Somerset to Cumbria. I suspect Millburn on the shipping record is actually Milborne Port which is only 5 miles from Yeovil. Hope this helps Peter PS!! In 1851 census, Ancestry has a Henry Curry Foot aged 10, living at Yeovil with grandparents Thomas and Frances Purchase. It ties together a lot of the names, but I can't explain why he'd be listed as Foot. I'll have to leave it to you to do a bit more research.
Jill, I teach genealogy classes as well as do some professional research. I try to help everyone, but this looks a bit tricky and will take more hours than I can afford to check everything. So I'll have leave the follow up to you. As I said previously, in 1851 Henry Curry Foot was living with grandparents Thomas Purchase and Frances. But in 1841, Ancestry has Thos mistranscribed as Wm Purchase. They are listed with Ann 20, Henry 20, Eliza 15 and Agnes 6. Thomas (Wm) is 35 and Frances 45. Now here's the rub. If you look on Family Search you will see they married in 1827, long after the birth of the first three children. So I believe Frances may have been previously married. In fact. the 1827 marriage give her as Frances FOOT If you follow up all the children on Family Search, you will find the family were Non Conformist (Baptist) and you see an image that has Frances as the daughter of William & Jane Brown. Thomas was born 1804 at West Coker to Henry Purchase and Dorcas. There was also another child Melina born about 1830 that doesn't appear in 1841, so probably died. Lots for you to check. Peter PS!! I'd suggest Ann Purchase b1820 was the mother of Henry Curry, but I can't find a marriage to Henry (Snr)
