Clicking on "1" will show you the details of the oldest. Unfortunately it starts in 1690 so it may not be of much use to you. There are some earlier records available as Bishop's Transcripts (contemporary copies sent to the local bishop) http://tinyurl.com/qhhabvs There are many gaps but some of the 1600s are covered. This is only the Record Office catalogue. To see the actual registers you have to either visit the RO or buy microfiche copies. The existing parish registers and some of the BTs (those in Dwelly's transcripts) have been transcribed for FreeREG and can be searched through them. http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/som/i.shtml#1 http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl But I'm afraid that if the events you want fall into the gaps in these records , there is very little chance of you finding them anywhere else. -- David Hartley

    3. Jill, If you have some sort of evidence that your family came from Ilchester and that they could go back to further generations, I would suggest that you actually purchase the PR's from the record centre as in the long run it will be cheaper. All you do is ask the Record Office for a copy of what is available for your place name in question. They will send a list. You choose what PR's for the time frame that you need, or all of them if you can afford it. If you have a wide range of families from this area you will pick them all up. You will then have the PR's and you too can become an OPC. You will find that you will revisit those Pr's dozens of times, not something that you could do if a researcher was involved. I too live in Australia and I have purchased nearly 40 parish records [could be more] and I just love my fiche to death: ) Bank fees do add up, so be careful and try to order as many as you can at once, they make good birthday/mother's day presents and don't go out of fashion.
