Hi all need some help to sort out Horsington parents. >From an archive, I read about a Horsington family who left Somerset and went to Surrey for while but then returned. I am trying to track that family. I found a baptism record in Surrey for twins John and Cornelius, 1803, parents John and Mary. They had other children in Surrey back as far as 1796. However no continuing Surrey presence that I could see. John the twin becomes a convict and goes to Australia abt 1822. He is fairly well documented. I would like to find out what happened to his twin brother Cornelius, as any records seem to merge him with brother john. and who were the parents Cornelius Horsington and Mary?. There seems to be several men named Cornelius with a wife Mary or some given as Mary - Hester. I am wondering if the man married twice, to Mary and then to Hester later. Winscombe is the town/area they are supposed to come from and return to in Somerset. John's family in Australia changed the name to Oslington when his children were born. . Grateful for any help. regards Marg OLeary Port Stephens NSW -----Original Message----- From: marg o'leary Sent: Saturday, February 01, 2014 8:19 AM To: eng-somerset@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-SOM] Horsngton family
Hi, " from an archive " you find the Horsingtons move from Somerset to Surrey , does this source tell you a date for this move ? is it a reliable archive ? . By chance I had some credits left on FMP and find Cornelius Horsington married Jane Godding at Banwell , Somerset May 1763., another marriage of a Cornelius Horsington , at St John`s Smith Square, Westminster , to Mary Nelson , in Sept 1795, she is a widow , and neither she nor Cornelius can sign their names, both sign with a X . they are married by banns which suggests that they lived at least for some time in the parish . I ran out of credits at that point and so can only record that there are further marriages of a Cornelius Horsington, in 1766 at Kewstoke , 1777 at Mark , and 1781 and 1812 at Winscombe . There is a will of a Cornelius Horsington late 85th Regt of Foot now an outpensioner of the Royal Hospital Chelsea , of St Pancras, Mddx , dated Dec 1825. This will is now available at Ancestry and is short simple and connects him immediately to Somerset. He says he is of 33 Brewer St , Somers Town, St Pancras and " feeling myself in that state of health which threatens immediate disolution being at the time in the full possession of my mental faculties.......I intend to bequeath a lifehold property which belongs to me consisting of one house and orchard and garden adjacent sited in Worle County of Somerset and which was bequeathed by my grandfather James Horsington to my father Cornelius by the death of the latter now devolves on me ...I do hereby bequeath the said property solely and entirely to my beloved sister Ann now Ann Diansterix (?) and her heirs and assigns for ever. dated 16 Nov 1825 witnessed Joseph Edbury John Warner." Proved 15 Dec 1825 by Ann Vieusseux wife natural and lawful sister , wife if Andre Vieusseux . Cornelius was buried in St Pancras in November 1825 aged 25. Father Cornelius seems to have died at Worle in 1816 I can find a Sarah bapt in Lambeth dau of Cornelius and Mary , in 1800 but not John and Cornelius. So that seems to unravel the mystery of Cornelius ........he joined the army and died very young. And from the will it would seem that Cornelius senior is the son of James Horsington maybe of Worle . According to genuki/somerset , Worle is 2 miles from Kewstoke, 4 miles from Banwell, 4 miles from Uphill, and about the same from Winscombe. life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "marg o'leary" <marglap@skead.net> To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 11, 2014 6:27 AM Subject: Re: [ENG-SOM] convict John Horsington > Hi all > > need some help to sort out Horsington parents. > >>From an archive, I read about a Horsington family who left Somerset and >>went > to Surrey for while but then returned. > I am trying to track that family. > > I found a baptism record in Surrey for twins John and Cornelius, 1803, > parents John and Mary. > They had other children in Surrey back as far as 1796. > > However no continuing Surrey presence that I could see. > > John the twin becomes a convict and goes to Australia abt 1822. Hi Marg, Elizabeth has covered much of the information I was about to give but if this "Archive" you mention is a family tree published on Ancestry you are right to check every entry! You should be very wary of any family tree which includes "John (Cornelius?) Oslington"[sic] when elsewhere on the same tree there is a link to an image of a baptism at St Mary Lambeth, showing very clearly that John and Cornelius HORSINGTON were twins. Regarding the property in Worle mentioned in the Will of Cornelius HORSINGTON in 1825 - there was a hearing in the Court of the Exchequer in 1827 which you can read online at http://archive.org/stream/reportscasesarg16chamgoog/reportscasesarg16chamgoog_djvu.txt which states that his father had died in 1814. However, although there is a burial of a Cornelius HORSINGTON in St Martin's Church Worle 29th March 1816, aged 73 this would make him about 52 when he married the widow Mary NELSON. I'm not sure whether this is the same Cornelius HORSINGTON. There is a Cornelius HORSINGTON baptised in Kewstoke 13th March 1744/45 s/o William & Mary which fits this burial - but the Will states that James HORSINGTON was the father of Cornelius the father You might try the Worle History Society, especially as the property was in Worle, http://www.worlehistorysociety.net/ I have a feeling that there is a Horsington Society which appears at Family History Fairs but I can't at the moment find any information about it. There are transcriptions of some of the parishes in which HORSINGTON appears on the web site of the Weston-super-Mare & District FHS - www.wsmfhs.org.uk and I know they have at least two members who list HORSINGTON amongst their interests.
