Hello Peter, Yes you are correct in that the parish records did start in 1538, according to Phillimore Atlas & Index of Parish Records, but not all of the Parish records started then as many of them did not exist at that time. Clerkenwell in Middlesex had only one church that would fit the time of the marriage & that is St James that started 1551. Any research in the 1500 & 1600's needs a lot of work for accuracy. I wonder Norman if you have tried to obtain any wills for the name Barnard? But you have to be very lucky to find 500 year old records especially since it's right in the middle of the Reformation. Family Search suggest 1538 as the earliest date for English records. But this is obviously not across all parishes. The place to check availability for specific parishes is http://www.archersoftware.co.uk/igi/index.htm But I stress this is only Family Search data on a parish by parish basis. Shepton Mallett marriages, for example, only cover from 1566-1679. There are also big gaps in baptism records, indicating records probably have not survived. Hello Peter, Thank you for your response. I have obtained the will of William Bannard (of Culworth, Northamptonshire) 27.6.1837. It proved to be very useful.
