Margaret, While no publication is perfect and we researchers should always aim to confirm basic facts ourselves, I think your comments about the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB) are rather harsh. I happen to know that publications like the ADB and the NZ Dictionary of Biography are very rigorously researched and vetted. Mistakes will certainly slip through but I don't think your comments are reasonable. For example, a search of the ADB finds 522 mentions of "freemason". Perhaps you're actually referring to one of the "biographical index" sites that simply replicate the information which is provided by individuals. (And an internet search, including newspaper obits, finds numerous references to Sir Charles Cooper's death as being on 24 May 1887.)
