John JAMES was born on April 28th., 1785, baptised May 29, 1785, in Dowlish Wake. He was a yeoman farmer at Croft Farm, Crewkerne, and occasional estate valuer at Crewkerne, occasionally working with his friend and cousin, John Symonds. He died, aged 75, on January 18th., 1861, having married Susannah CUFF of West Dowlish at Kingstone on July 21, in 1808, in the presence of James ROPER and John ROPER. Family with six daughters, a – f , listed below, were enumerated in Crewkerne for the 1841 census; John and Susannah had issue: a. Ann Cuff JAMES, baptized in Dowlish Wake, Somerset, on February 2nd., 1810; b. Mary Rook JAMES, baptized in Dowlish Wake on January 16, 1812; c. Susannah Cuff JAMES, born in ?Crewkerne? on January 31st., 1814 and baptized in Kingstone on June 4th., 1816; died on March 26th., 1898 (M.I. Kingstone); d. Rachel Cuff JAMES, born in Crewkerne on March 20th., 1816, and baptized in Kingstone on June 4th., 1816; died on July 9th., 1894 (M.I. Kingstone); e. Elizabeth JAMES, (Betsey) born in Crewkerne on November 18th., 1817 and baptized in Kingstone on January 19th., 1820; died on July 1st., 1894 (M.I. Kingstone); f. Jane JAMES, born about 1819 / 20 in Crewkerne and baptized in Kingstone on January 19th., 1820; enumerated in Crewkerne, with her parents, in 1841; g. Honor Symonds JAMES, born about 1825 in Crewkerne and baptized in Kingstone on December 27th., 1825; she was not enumerated at her parents’ home in Crewkerne in the 1841 census.
