Hi Listers I am from Melbourne Australia and new to the list. Can SKS tell me what would be available in the jail records from Wilton Gaol for 1847? And where can I access these records? Thanks Julie

They are not online, so it will mean either finding someone who is going to the record office and can take some time out of their own research to look the entry up for you or employing either an independent researcher or using the Record Office's own research service. I'm not familiar with the contents of the Wilton Gaol records but those of Ilchester contain the name, age, crime and sentence. Ilchester also has a descriptions book which, as the name suggests, gives a description of the offenders, ie height, build, hair and eye colour, any distinguishing marks together with any ability to read and/or write. Have a look at the Record Office's online catalogue: http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/ -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
