Hello everyone, I finished researching my Joneses a few years ago now, but have just had my interest re-awakened by a contact from a relative making an enquiry. I wonder if any kind lister could possibly help? In return, I live very close to the Wiltshire Record Office in Chippenham, and would be willing to do look ups. My query is regarding John JONES & his wife Mary PERKINS. They married on 15 May 1838 in Raddington. On 1841 census of Battscombe the couple are living with children John (7), James (3) & William (1). A researcher found the baptism of John Perkins JONES at Raddington on 14 May 1838 (the day before his parents wedding) the baptism of William Jones in Chipstable in 1840, but no sign of James Perkins Jones. That was as far as I got. My relative, however, has traced James's birth in the GRO and has the certificate which states: James Perkins Jones born 4th April 1838 in Chipstable. Father is John Jones who was also the informant and was resident in Raddington, he placed his mark on the register so was illiterate. The birth wasnt registered till the 18th May 1838 however, but heres the fly in the ointment: the mother is listed as BETTY Jones formerly Perkins and not Mary Jones formerly Perkins! He says I dont really know what to make of that. For this to be a different James Jones there would need to be 2 John Joneses both living in Raddington having both married a Perkins woman, having sons about the same time and both calling them James! and then for the John and Betty to have left the area or died before 1841 as they dont appear in the 1841 census. SO the question is is the James Perkins Jones on the birth certificate the same as the James Jones, son of John & Mary Jones on the 1841 census? I would love to find the baptismal entry for James, to see who his mother was, but of course, he could NOT have been baptized (although all their other children were) or maybe he wasn't baptized until later on, and my researcher didn't look far enough ahead? Does anyone have any bright ideas?? Many thanks to all who've read this far! Joanna Wheatland
