Hi guys, just a general query, I'm transcribing the 1841 Census for Hundred of Whitley for FreeCEN and I'm currently transcibing Walton. Lots and lots of men are stone cutters (as opposed to only a few in other townships/villages). Was there a quarry in the area? Just wondering, it has peaked my curiosity Debbie McKay Sth Australia
Hello Debbie, I don't know much about them, but there were certainly quarries in Street. Quarry Road in Street isn't far from the border with Walton and in that area of Street a few years ago there was a big Radon gas scare. Radon gas is a sort of by product of the Blue Lias stone which was quarried. There were also quarries in Somerton and Long Sutton, but those were probably too far away for Walton folk to travel back in 1841.
