Tom, Oswego is a lovely town in New York State, USA http://www.co.oswego.ny.us/ Nancy USA New York >My name is Tomi and I live in Oswego, NY Errrr, where is the above place please? Cheers, Tom <tomp@st.net.au> Tom Perrett
Nancy, I looked at Ancestry.com 1841 and 1851 census indexes and did not find any George Cann b. about 1834 in Somerset in either census. There were several in Devon, but none had parents named Robert and Catherine. I looked at the images of about a dozen possible Georges in 1841 - one had Robert 40, Grace 30, Ann 8, John 6, George 4, at Bishops Morchard, Devon (relationships not given in 1841). Did not find a Robert and Catherine in 1851. Maybe someone else spotted something I did not----- Many pairs of eyes are better than one. Could be indexed as CONN due to questionable writing, or something else, but I did not follow up on that. Unfortunately, obituaries (and the persons providing the information) are prone to errors. Something to keep in mind. Ruth Illinois, USA
Does this sound like yours? There is a a marriage of Robert CANN and Catherine LOCK in North Molton, Devon. The IGI batch number is M522811. The date is 13 May 1821. In the 1851 census: Catherine is listed as age 57 born about 1794 in North Molton, DEVON. The family was living in the civil parish of Exford, the Ecclesiastical parish of Bath and Wells, in the county of SOMERSET.. Robert is listed as born in 1779 so he was about 15 years older than Catherine. His birthplace is given as Exford, SOMERSET. Exford is nine miles from North Malton. Children living with them in 1851 are Michael born 1842 and John born 1822 and they are identified as being born in Molland, DEVON. Molland is about 7 miles from Exford, SOMERSET. The reference is HO107 piece 1890 folio 330 page 16 GSU 221040. I didn't find George in 1851 census. However, the IGI shows a George Cann, age 47 (birth 1834) born in Spreyton, DEVON. I don't know the geography at all (all distances cited are from Genuki) so don't know the likelihood of this being your George. His wife Mary was born in Chagford, DEVON. I'm only suggesting this because he is born at the right time and his eldest daughter is named CATHERINE M. CANN. In 1881 the family was in Crediton, Devon. Reference is RG11 piece/folio 2230/37, page 15.
