Hello all listers, I am looking for a place and year of birth for JAMES EMMS who was a soldier in the 39th Regiment of Foot from c 1818-1832 when he took his discharge in Sydney Australia. >From my research I feel that his son is, THOMAS HENRY EMMS, who it is said was born in Dublin c1819 when the 39th Rgt. was based there. T.H. Emms said he arrived in Australia in 1826 which coincides with the arrival of the 39th Rgt. which was accompanying convict ships to Australia and later serving in different parts of Australia.(Well documented) T.H. EMMS married and named his first born son JAMES WHITEWAY EMMS. The people researching this family in Australia feel that WHITEWAY may have been the place of birth of JAMES EMMS. WHITEWAY is in SOMERSET so this is pobably a good list to post on. We have no formal documentation of THOMAS HENRY EMMS' arrival in Australia, nor which ship JAMES EMMS travelled on. We know JAMES EMMS was accompanied by his wife who was always referred to as MRS. EMMS. We do have copies of JAMES EMMS letter to the Colonial Secretary re his land allotment in 1832. We can find no death for him or for his wife. We have access to his service records which unfortunately does not give a regimental number!!! This makes finding more information on him almost impossible. Is EMMS a SOMERSET name? Is WHITEWAY a SOMERSET town/village? How would someone in Australia begin to look for records from c1790-1818 in theis part of the UK? I appreciate your time reading my post , Robyn in Wodonga Australia
I wonder if there is anyone one out there who maybe able to help with the following problem that I have? If so can you PLEASE email OFF LIST. I had a motherboard failure and had to get a new PC (with Vista.) I then put the old disc into an external HDD and it works all OK (operating system is XP) I need to access the email that will be (Somewhere) on the old HDD as there are some important information stored into folders on outlook express. Any help from the knowledgeable computer buffs out there please at all to retrieve the hidden info would be greatly received. Kind Regards, Steve

Have you checked all the relevant War Office records on microfilm available through LDS Family History Centres? For example, this one - Soldiers documents : service documents of soldiers, containing particulars of age, birthplace and trade or occupation on enlistment, a record of service, including any decorations and the reason for discharge to pension, 1760-1872 vol. 552 39th Rgmnt. of Foot: Dalton-Flynne 1760-1854 FHL BRITISH Film 886688 (I'm assuming he was not an officer - in which case there is a separate series of records dealing with officers). There are also many other microfilms dealing with soldiers coming to the Australian colonies; also of pension records. You should at least be able to find when his pension ceased and get some indication of date/place of death from that. >We can find no death for him or for his wife. It's possible he returned to the UK and he may be traceable on UK census. Do any details about him appear in the book "British army pensioners abroad, 1772-1899" by Norman K. Crowder? >>From my research I feel that his son is, THOMAS HENRY EMMS, who it is said was born in Dublin c1819 when the 39th Rgt. was based there. There is a series of microfiche called British Army Chaplains Returns (or something similar) which has baptisms of children of army personnel. May be worth checking in a genealogical library or through an LDS Family History Centre. > T.H. EMMS married and named his first born son JAMES WHITEWAY EMMS. WHITEWAY may also have been a family surname - eg. a grandmother's maiden name. Vivien Tasmania
Vivien, Thankyou for those sources. I have spent hours in the Mitchell Libray looking through the AJCP files for the 39th regiment, noting his name etc on the files and dates, but no Regimental number. As I live 7 hours drive from Sydney and almost 4 from Melbourne this research is almost impracticle. I have contacted a researcher who specialises in Military records in the UK and before he will start he needs JAMES EMMS regimental number > Have you checked all the relevant War Office records on microfilm > available through LDS Family History Centres? > For example, this one - > > Soldiers documents : service documents of soldiers, containing > particulars of age, birthplace and trade or occupation on enlistment, a > record of service, including any decorations and the reason for discharge > to pension, 1760-1872 No I haven't but there is one 5 minutes drive away. I will check their opening hours. > > vol. 552 39th Rgmnt. of Foot: Dalton-Flynne 1760-1854 FHL BRITISH Film > 886688 > > It's possible he returned to the UK and he may be traceable on UK census. I will try this. > > Do any details about him appear in the book "British army pensioners > abroad, 1772-1899" by Norman K. Crowder? No he took a pay out insttead of a pension.> > There is a series of microfiche called British Army Chaplains Returns (or > something similar) which has baptisms of children of army personnel. I have tried looking at this without success not in the IGI and too early for civil records. > > So many thankyous . Vivien you have opened other avenues for me to > explore.
