    3. Very helpful Patrick - moves the wall back a bit. J (possibly James) Notley is Lord of the Manor but no sign of a Chillington House yet. Parish records only go back to 1750 unfortunately so I will try to find some biographical stuff in Dorset; maybe I can find someone who has been this way before me. thanks again Philip Maddocks ----- Original Message ----- From: "Philip Maddocks" <listenat@talktalk.net> To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 8:48 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-SOM] NOTLEY Chillington House > thanks Patrick > > Philip Maddocks > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Patrick Williams" <pat.williams14@ukonline.co.uk> > To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 8:40 PM > Subject: Re: [ENG-SOM] NOTLEY Chillington House > > >> Hi Philip >> >> A google search for Chillington Somerset identifies it as South Petherton >> and gives several links including >> http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Chillington/index.html this has >> mention of a NOTLEY >> >> Regards >> >> Patrick Williams >> Bruton Somerset >> >>> -----Original Message----- >>> From: eng-somerset-bounces@rootsweb.com >> [mailto:eng-somerset-bounces@rootsweb.com] >>> On Behalf Of Philip Maddocks >>> Sent: 23 June 2008 18:27 >>> To: ENG-SOMERSET-L@rootsweb.com >>> Subject: [ENG-SOM] NOTLEY Chillington House >>> >>> Can anyone tell me which parish Chillington House was/is in? >>> >>> I am trying to trace the NOTLEY family from Combe Sydenham back. >>> >>> Philip Maddocks >> >> >> ------------------------------- >> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >> ENG-SOMERSET-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the >> quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-SOMERSET-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Philip, Have you tried Google Books? http://books.google.com/ I did a search with "chillington house notley" and there were several interesting results - although you may have already covered them. 3. Chillington [if it is the same as the manor] is just north of midway along the A30 between Chard & Crewkerne. A few references are made to Chillington Manor in the Victoria County History. These are a few bits. In 1232 it was part of the manor of South Petherton. The Pouletts in 1788 continued to lease the tithes of Lopen, Seavington & Chillington. Southarp [South Harp] was first described as a manor in 1475 -- & by the mid 15th century was linked with Chillington for administrative purposes. Southarp was sold together with Chillington in 1540. What seems odd is that Chillington appears more associated with Over Stratton & South Harp. The Pouletts went "bad" in 1788 & had to sell up in that area which caused a minor population shift to there to newly created small holdings. Nothing is said [that I've quickly found] to say anything of a major manor house at Chillington. Seymours owned it at one time so wonder if tracking them might help. Then again, Chillington doesn't arise in a general thinking in the Stratton area so maybe it was near the A30. Not much help but good luck. Geoff

    3. Geoff >From what I have so far it would seem that you are pretty much spot on; that the house was near to the A30. The information about the Pouletts/Seymours may help if I can now find evidency of change of ownership.
