Hi Folks I have been following this thread in the archives, but not right at the beginning, I notice that most of the mention is regarding Musgrove Park Hospital and the old East Reach Hospital, where I was a frequent visitor to A&E, this hospital has now been turned to offices and was recently used by the Careers Service, or whatever they call themselves today, this was opened in 1812 and supported by public subscription, Taken from a Description of Taunton from Pigot and Co.'s National Commercial Directory of Somerset 1830:- the infirmary called 'the Taunton and Somerset hospital and an infirmary for diseases of the eye", this was a couple of doors away from the main hospital and latterly used as an out patients department. Mention has also been made about the old Leper House, now restored after a fire in the thatched roof, and converted to housing. I have not seen any reference to the other hospitals, there was the isolation Hospital in Cheddon Road, not sure when this was built but certainly before 1940 as my elder brother spent some time there, there was also Canon Street, a maternity hospital, or nursing home as it would have been called then, again this was built and in operation long before the advent of the NHS, brother was born there in 1930 and I don’t think he was one of the first, I could be wrong!! There was also the Workhouse which saw the birth of many children from various parts of the area, many being sent in from outside the town for concealment!
