Author: DaveBoylan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.som.general/12867.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Sandra, Concerning William Lovell, Compton-Martin, Somerset, and the IGI, the Latter Day Saints may not have placed it's parish church index holdings for the town and parish on it's website as yet. But, information from the Latter Day Saints (LDS) online version of the Family History Library Catalog, shows the Family History Library has filmed records and information for Compton-Martin. Please see below for the topics in the catalog: England, Somerset, Compton-Martin Topics England, Somerset, Compton-Martin - Census England, Somerset, Compton-Martin - Church records England, Somerset, Compton-Martin - Land and property England, Somerset, Compton-Martin - Poorhouses, poor law, etc. England, Somerset, Compton-Martin - Schools England, Somerset, Compton-Martin - Taxation ____ Further information at the catalog shows the following church records have been filmed for Compton-Martin: England, Somerset, Compton-Martin - Church records Titles: Bishop's transcripts for Compton-Martin, 1601-1836 Church of England. Parish Church of Compton-Martin (Somersetshire) ____ The LDS have filmed the Compton-Martin Church of England Bishop's Transcripts and Parish Registers. The baptism record of William Lovell may be recorded in these registers on the LDS microfilm. The marriage of his parents may also be recorded, provided of course, they were married in the parish. Information and film number for the Compton-Martin Church of England Bishop's Transcripts is below: Bishop's transcripts for Compton-Martin, 1601-1836 Authors Church of England. Parish Church of Compton-Martin (Somersetshire) (Main Author) Baptisms, marriages and burials, 1601-1640, 1661-1669, 1695, 1732, 1749-1751, 1776, 1800-1836. Some other years also missing and/or in poor condition. FHL BRITISH Film 1470914 Items 10-11 ____ The microfilm of the Compton-Martin Bishop's Transcripts can be ordered from your nearest Family History Center. Order microfilm number 1470914. Next is information and film numbers for the Compton-Martin parish registers. These are different than the Bishop's Transcripts, though they may contain basically the same information as the Bishop's Transcripts: Parish registers, 1559-1982 Authors Church of England. Parish Church of Compton-Martin (Somersetshire) (Main Author) Baptisms, 1559-1641, 1654-1885 Marriages, 1569-1641, 1654-1885 Banns, 1857-1886 Burials, 1559-1641, 1654-1894 List of charities, 1592-1601 Note: Very poor legibility in the registers for the early 19th century. I'd suggest ordering both the Bishop's Transcripts and the parish registers, as one film may be more legible than the other. More information about Compton-Martin can be found at the Somerset Online Parish Clerk's link at: http://wsom-opc.org.uk/Data/Parish_Gaz.php?k=298 The information at the link shows the name of the Church of England parish is St. Michael's. You'll also see an aerial photo of Compton-Martin at the OPC link. I found a William and Mary Lovell in the 1841 census living in Compton-Martin on Mill Lane. In the household are Ann, age 7; Elizabeth, age 4; and James, age 2. Also in the household is a 1 year old Charles Wells, who may have been related to William and Mary. Unfortunately, the 1841 census does not give the relationships of family members to the head of the household. In addition, ages in the 1841 census were not always accurate, especially for those who were older than 15. All the members of the Lovell household are shown to have been born in the "Same County," that is, Somersetshire. This is indicated by "Yes," in the enumeration for each person in the household. The census follows: 1841 England Census Civil Parish: Compton Martin Hundred: Chewton County/Island: Somerset Country: England Street Address: Mill Lane Registration district: Clutton Sub registration district: Harptree Name, Sex, Age, Occupation, Whether Born in Same County William Lovell, Male, 30, Ag Lab, Yes Mary Lovell, Female, 35, Yes Ann Lovell, Female, 7, Yes Elizabeth Lovell, Female, 4, Yes James Lovell, Male, 2, Yes Charles Wells, Male, 1, Yes ____ I can't be positive these are your Lovells Sandra, but they may be. I continued with further research about the Lovell children as if they were in your genealogy however. I next searched for the civil registration birth indexes for two of the children of William and Mary Lovell. The search was conducted at the FreeBMD website at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ By way of explanation, the British government did not begin to record births, marriages, and deaths in England and Wales until July 1837. Indexes of these births, marriages, and deaths are grouped into quarters. The quarters include March, June, September, and December. For example, the March quarter consists of the months of January, February, and March. The June quarter consists of April, May, and June; the September quarter of July, August, and September; and the December quarter of October, November, and December. In the 1841 census shown above, Elizabeth Lovell is shown to be 4 years old, which places her year of birth in 1837. However, if she were born before July of 1837 (the September quarter), there would not be a birth record for her. Just like there would be no civil birth record for 7 year old Ann, who would have been born circa 1834. I searched the GRO birth indexes at the FreeBMD website for Elizabeth Lovell in Compton-Martin for 1837, but did not find an index for her. I then looked for the GRO birth index for James Lovell, who is shown to be 2 years old in 1841, placing his year of birth circa 1839. I may have found the index for him. The index shows the birth of a James Lovell recorded in the Clutton Registration District for the June quarter of 1839. I can't be positive this James Lovell was the son of your William and Mary, as the names of the parents are not given in the GRO indexes, though the full names of the parents, including the mother's maiden name, should be listed in the full birth record available from the GRO. The index follows: Births Jun 1839 Surname First name(s) District Vol Page Lovell James Clutton 11 105 ____ The full birth record for James Lovell can be found in Volume 11, Page 105 of the GRO registers. You can order the full birth record from the GRO website at: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ The least expensive method of ordering GRO certificates is to order them online, and by providing the Volume (11), and Page Number (105), from the marriage index you see above. Before ordering certificates online, you will need to type in your email address and provide a password to log in to the site. The GRO link to log onto the site can be found at: https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp The cost of a certificate by ordering online is £7.00. The full baptism certificate for James Lovell should provide you with the names of his parents, as mentioned earlier. Birth records will also contain some or all of the following details, which comes from the FreeBMD website: Births : District, Date & Place of Birth, Child's ForeNames & Surname, Child's Sex, Father's Name, Fathers Place of Birth, Father's Occupation, Mother's Name, Mother's Occupation, Mother's Place of Birth, Mother's Usual Address, Informant's Name, Informants Qualification, Informant's Address, Informant's Signature, Date of Registration,Registrar's Name & Signature, Child's Revised Name (if any, after registration). ____ The index show that James's birth was recorded in the Clutton Registration District. The Clutton Registration District recorded births, marriages, and deaths for several towns and parishes in Somersetshire, including Compton-Martin. For a list of these towns and parishes, go to the GenUKI website link at: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/clutton.html Continuing with research in the 1841 census, I also found the family of John and Ann Lovell and children in Compton-Martin. John Lovell may have been the brother or perhaps cousin of William. But, he may have been no relation at all. The census for John and Ann Lovell and family is below: 1841 England Census Civil Parish: Compton Martin Hundred: Chewton County/Island: Somerset Country: England Street Address or Place: Compton Martin Registration district: Clutton Sub registration district: Harptree Name, Sex, Age, Occupation, Whether Born in Same County John Lovell, Male, 30, Ag Lab, Yes Ann Lovell, Female, 40, Ag Lab, Yes Elizabeth Lovell, Female, 10, Yes Maria Lovell, Female, 7, Yes Ann Lovell, Female, 5, Yes George Lovell, Male, 1 Month, Yes ____ Also living in Compton-Martin, as shown in the 1841 census, is the family of James and Eliza Lovell and their children. James may have been the brother of William and John Lovell: 1841 England Census Civil Parish: Compton Martin Hundred: Chewton County/Island: Somerset Country: England Street Address or Place: Registration district: Clutton Sub registration district: Harptree Name, Sex, Age, Occupation, Whether Born in Same County James Lovell, Male, 45, Ag Lab, Yes Eliza Lovell, Female, 30, Yes Louisa Lovell, Female, 10, Yes Sarah Lovell, Female, 7, Yes Henry Lovell, Male, 5, Yes Martha Lovell, Female, 2, Yes ____ Other Lovells in the 1841 census include Richard, 25 years old; Sarah, 60 years old; and Sarah, 7 years old. I am wondering if it is possible that 60 year old Sarah was the mother to your William, and the other Lovells, including James, and John, and of course Richard. The enumeration follows: 1841 England Census Civil Parish: Compton Martin Hundred: Chewton County/Island: Somerset Country: England Street Address or Place: Compton Martin Occupation: View image Registration district: Clutton Sub registration district: Harptree Name, Sex, Age, Occupation, Whether Born in Same County Richard Lovell, Male, 25, Ag Lab, Yes Sarah Lovell, Female, 60, Yes Sarah Lovell, Female, 7, Yes ____ The older Sarah Lovell is again enumerated in the 1851 census, where her age is given as 73. She is shown to be living in the household of Richard and Mary Lovell and their four children whose names are Alfred, James, Mary, and Matthew. Their address in the census is given as "No. 317 The Street." 1851 England Census Civil Parish: Compton Martin County/Island: Somerset Country: England Street Address: No. 317 The Street Registration district: Clutton Sub registration district: Harptree ED, institution, or vessel: 3 Household schedule number: 37 Name, Relation to Head of Household, Condition as to Marriage, Sex, Age, Occupation, Where Born Richard Lovell, Head, Married, Male, 35, Ag Lab, Somerset Compton Martin Mary Lovell, Wife, Married, Female, 30, Somerset Compton Martin Alfred Lovell, Son, Male, 7, Scholar, Somerset Compton Martin James Lovell, Son, Male, 5, Somerset Compton Martin Mary Lovell, Daughter, Female, 2, Somerset Compton Martin Mathew Lovell, Son, 5 Mo, Somerset Compton Martin Sarah Lovell, Relation, Widow, 73, General Servant, Somerset Compton Martin ____ To recap Sandra, order the Compton Martin Church of England parish registers and Bishop's Transcripts from the Family History Center to see if you can find the baptism of William. His baptism should give you the full name of his father and first name of his mother, but may not provide you with his mother's maiden name. You'll also want to search the parish registers for the marriage of his parents. If found, the church marriage should give you the maiden name of William's mother. The marriage record may also tell you names of the fathers of the bride and groom. Likewise church marriage records should also tell you the maiden name of William's wife Mary. Keep in mind however, that is was a tradition that marriages took place in the bride's parish. If you cannot find the marriage of William and Mary in the Compton-Martin Church of England registers, you can search the registers for the parish of St. Cuthburt, also known as the parish of Wells, as this is the parish in which Chilcott is located, according to Lewis's Topographical Dictionary, 4th edition, printed in 1848. Lewis's Topographical Dictionary can be found at the British History Online website at: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/source.asp?pubid=445 The entry for Chilcott, from Lewis's Topographical Dictionary is below: Chilcott CHILCOTT, a tything in the parish of St. Cuthbert, city and union of Wells, hundred of Wells Forum, E. division of the county of Somerset; containing 70 inhabitants. From: A Topographical Dictionary of England (1848), pp. 593-597. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=50873. Date accessed: 27 April 2008. ____ More information about Wells can be found at the Somerset Online Parish Clerk's website at: http://wsom-opc.org.uk/Data/Parish_Gaz.php?k=560 This site shows that the name of the Anglican, or Church of England parish in Wells, is St. Cuthbert. The LDS have filmed the parish registers and banns of marriage for St. Cuthbert's Church of England for the time period that William and Mary would have been wed. Because it's not certain when William and Mary were married, I've included two microfilm reels for the St. Cuthbert's Registers, one of which ends with the year 1826, and the other which begins with the year 1826. Information and microfilms are below: Parish registers of Wells (St. Cuthbert's), 1609-1901 Authors Church of England. Parish Church of Wells (Somerset) The parish church of Wells is known as St. Cuthbert. Baptisms, 1740-1826 Marriages, 1740-1837 Banns, 1754-1834 Burials, 1740-1835 FHL BRITISH Film 1526770 Baptisms, 1826-1890 Marriages, 1837-1900 Banns, 1834-1869 Burials, 1835-1900 FHL BRITISH Film 1526763 ____ The St. Cuthbert's Church of England parish registers can be found on LDS microfilms 1526770 and 1526763. The registers of St. Cuthbert's may also contain the baptism of Mary. Best Wishes Sandra, Dave Boylan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
