The main hospital was Taunton Hospital in East Reach. Musgrove Park did not go over to National Health until after WW2 as it was a military hospital. And there is also the lepers hospital of course! Philip Maddocks

Thanks for the clarification :)) I knew Musgrove had been a military hosp at one time because there are still signs above some doors referring to their previous use (such as Mess Hall IIRC). The corridors are also wide enough to allow vehicles to be driven down them! I was under the impression that the hospital in East Reach had been a nursing home or women's hospital. Maybe that was a later use. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
Fascinating to think of someone driving through a hospital! Don't know much about the Taunton Hospital but the building is still there; I think it is about 200 years old but it may not be the original building. The Leper Hospital is now houses but still thatched. Quicker than walking that's for sure!! :)) > Don't know much about the Taunton Hospital but the building is still there; > I think it is about 200 years old but it may not be the original building. I'll have a look next time I go passed. There's a plaque on it detailing its history. It's a very grand building but no longer a hospital or anything connected with medicine now, although (IIRC) it did retain some connections until a few years ago. It had been closed up for a while before then. > The Leper Hospital is now houses but still thatched. Where is that? I've not seen it at all, but then I don't know Taunton all that well. Just how to get there and cross it by public transport to get to the record office :)) -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
Pass the old hospital on your right; continue down East Reach to the traffic lights and turn right and immediately left. It is a few yards on on the left. it looks really out of place. It was renovated a few years ago by West Somerset Rural Housing Association (now known as Falcon Rural Housing Association). I am not sure what you need to get one though Philip Maddocks ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charani" <familyhunter@family-hunter.co.uk> To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 17, 2008 5:59 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-SOM] Taunton Hospitals > Philip Maddocks wrote: >> Fascinating to think of someone driving through a hospital! > > Quicker than walking that's for sure!! :)) > >> Don't know much about the Taunton Hospital but the building is still >> there; >> I think it is about 200 years old but it may not be the original >> building. > > I'll have a look next time I go passed. Near to the old Military Hospital in Aldershot, was a Maternity Hospital for Military wives. Perhaps part of East Reach had the same use as well as the main use for military personnel. Dennis White
