I am researching Owen Sweet born about 1907 somewhere in the south of England. he was a member of the Royal Navy and was believed to have held the rank of Comander. I do not know whether he was involved in WW1 or WW2 or both. He immigrated to Sydney Australia in the early 1940s and married Mary Woods in 1945 in Newcastle New South Wales. -------Original Message------- From: eng-somerset-request@rootsweb.com Date: 30/03/2008 8:39:26 AM To: eng-somerset@rootsweb.com Subject: ENG-SOMERSET Digest, Vol 3, Issue 253 Today's Topics: 1. Unfortunately, William had left Butleigh by the turn of the century having married Sarah Hilborne in Aller in 1798. I'm still building a picture of his siblings to see if any remained in Butleigh. Bearing in mind the ages of the adults in 1841, they could possibly be the children of Williams brothers, if he had any!! Thanks again, Geoff Morse _________________________________________________________________ Win 100?s of Virgin Experience days with BigSnapSearch.com http://www.bigsnapsearch.com ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Sat, 29 Mar 2008 21:48:30 +1030 From: "Debbie McKay" <debmckay@optusnet.com.au> Subject: [ENG-SOM] Independant occupation To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <D3E116CE84EB4EFF86A6ACC48A070E06@A> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original > Hi list, I'm currently transcribing the 1841 Census for Hundred of Whitley > and have come across a number of children (under 15) who are listed as > independant. She could be a relation. It could be that the enumerator decided to put something down for everyone and if the child wasn't a scholar deemed them to be Independent. Or it could be that was how the household schedules were completed. Perhaps one person was helping a number of others to complete the schedules, hence the consistency. In Walton (which is in the Whitley Hundred) there are only 17 given as Ind. The vast majority of those are upwards of 70 with a handful younger (between 40 and 60). There are a couple of 25 year olds but only one girl (between 15 and 19) and she was living alone. There are no occupations against a great many of the villagers though. It isn't something that's uniform across the whole of the hundred, just the parish within it that you're currently doing. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk ------------------------------ Message: 5 Date: Sat, 29 Mar 2008 23:29:57 +1030 From: "Debbie McKay" <debmckay@optusnet.com.au> Subject: Re: [ENG-SOM] Independant occupation To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <608048B2869440E49AE78BF84AC63E18@A> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Thanks Charani, I was wondering. A.F Ward, one of the descendant, founded Mount Gay Rum. His grandfather William, b. 1791 in Barbados, married Elizabeth Payne. His Great grandfather was John. I have no further information. I am also looking for a connection to the family of John Bonyun, b 1640. May have been married to Mary Cutting in Barbados, 03 Feb 1668.
