Its definitely "Edwin" in both 1881 and 1871 census: In 1881 we have, living at Yeabridge, South Petherton, Somerset: Solomon Mabey - Head - Mar - age 46 - Groom - born Haselbury Elizth Mabey - Wife - Mar - age 40 - no occ - born East Chinnock Edwin Mabey - Son - - Age 14 - ag lab - born Haselbury Mary Mabey - Dau - - age 13 - Scholar - born Haselbury Ellen A Mabey - Dau - age 8 - scholar - born Haselbury Rose A Mabey - Dau - age 3 - scholar - born Haselbury In 1871 we have the same family (less Ellen & Rose of course!) spelt "Maby" living at Lodge Cottage, Haselbury Plucknet, Somerset Solomon is a "coachman" aged 35, Elizabeth age 30 is a glover, Edwin age 3 is a scholar, and Mary aged 2 has no occupation. I can't find him in the 1891 census But he's living with his wife Annie E in North Street, Haselbury Plucknet in 1901: Edwin Mabey - Head - M - 33 - Carpenter on estate - worker - born Som't Haselbury Annie E Mabey - wife - M - 25 - - - born Som't Haselbury There is an Edwin Mabey registered at Yeovil RD in the September Quarter of 1867 (Vol 5c Page 479) I'm not convinced your soldier is the same man. Born Haselbury Plunkett Somerset. I can not find any record of a Edward Mabey born Haselbury Plunkett Somerset. on the FreeBDM web Site. he would have been registered in Yeovil Somerset I know Edwin Mabey could have go overseas while in the Army but if someome could check the spelling of the name in the 1981 Census to see if it could be Edwin and not Edward TIA Ronald Chesney [email protected]
