    1. [ENG-SOM] Crew members lost on "MERRIMAC"
    2. >From The Morning Post ( London, England ), Saturday, December 02, 1899; pg. 7; Issue 39780. OVERDUE STEAMSHIP. - Messrs. Elder Dempster's 4,000-ton steamer " Merrimac ", built in Belfast nine years since, now 37 days out from Quebec for Belfast, with a general cargo, is still missing. The passage usually occupies 14 days, and, as she has neither been spoken nor heard of since leaving Quebec, it is feared she has foundered in the Atlantic with all hands. The "Merrimac" carried a crew of 26, the majority hailing from Liverpool. >From The Bristol Mercury and Daily Post ( Bristol, England ), Saturday, December 30, 1899; Issue 16112. THE MISSING MERRIMAC. The Elder Dempster steamer " Merrimac", 59 days out from Quebec to Belfast, and 46 days overdue, has never been heard of since leaving Quebec. In the "Liverpool Journal of Commerce" last week the vessel was posted as uninsurable, and any hope of her seems now to have been abandoned. The only chance is that some of the crew may have been picked up in their boats, but even then they ought to have been heard of by this time. Mr. Charles JARMAN has been collecting information as to the addresses of the crew and the families dependant upon the men, and they are given below. Several gentlemen have approached by Mr. JARMAN with a view to forming a committee and starting a fund. Elder, Dempster & Co. are acting generously in the matter, and are paying to the friends or relatives the men's wages, and they are also taking steps to do something further with reference to a fund for helping them.
