    3. Hello, I am looking for Martins around Barrow and Cadbury, especially the family of John Martin. He was christened at South Barrow in 1679, his father was also John and John chr 1679 married Joan Day in 1699 at North Cadbury. John and Joan had a son John christened 1700 at North Cadbury; this John had children including Peter christened 1720, Mary christened 1723 and Elias christened 1727; all at North Cadbury no mother named , and Matthew christened 1728 at North Barrow (his mother was Ann). I am descended from Matthew who married Elizabeth Garland 1755 at North Barrow. Is anyone else researching this family especially the families of Peter, Mary, Elias and Matthew? cheers Helen

    3. Hi Helen You might want to check the nearby (7 miles) parish of Horsington records as well, although I am not related, I noticed several Martin families in the 1550-1700 period. I have ancestors in both villages. 3. Hello Roy I bought microfiche of neighbouring parishes in the Catsash, Whitley and Whitstone hundreds and did a search and the result was that I narrowed my Martins down to origin in Barrow and Cadbury. I also used the poll tax records for the 1640s to work out who lived in which parish and that was helpful. Also British History Online has information on which Martins owned land and how land was passed down through families around Barrow and Cadbury. Matthew and Elias are names found in several generations but I found several Peter Martins born between 1720 and 1730 in surrounding parishes. But there is an unrelated family of Martins in South Petherton who also used Matthew as a family name. My Martin family married into the Nortons and Stockers at Somerton. They acquired land when they married and passed that land down through their sons and daughters and the result was that by 1800 they had moved to East Pennard, Uphill, Wheathill and Hornblotton. Stocker, Norton and Champney were used as second names. By the way I have an unrelated Martin family in Somerton which I can't trace backwards. Henry Martin married Elizabeth How in 1701 somewhere in the Bath and Wells diocese and they settled at Somerton. Their daughter Elizabeth married John Stocker Norton about 1725 place unknown and they lived in Somerton. Their son William Norton had a daughter Mary who married Matthew Martin born about 1760 at Barrow . They married at East Pennard in 1793. So I have two Martin lines who intermarried. cheers Helen On Fri, Jun 10, 2011 at 6:09 AM, Roy a'Court <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi Helen > > You might want to check the nearby (7 miles) parish of Horsington records as > well, although I am not related, I noticed several Martin families in the > 1550-1700 period.
