Thank you Marion and Brad for your help, I wish I could find his birth that would confirm where he was born, but have had no joy so far. I have tried Free BMD and Ancestry and there are no matches. I have found no other census for him but this could be because he was a policeman and possibly transferred from town to town. When he was listed in 1911 Portsmouth he was a Police Sergeant. My cousin has his police record and on this he is recorded as being born in Somerset. Well I have just found a 1901 census for Frederick and his wife Mary Jane in Portsmouth, he is a Police Constable and is now listed as being born in Portsmouth. Don't you just love these mysteries. Alternatively, as a long shot, there is a hamlet called Sherborne, near Litton. It is between Chewton Mendip and West Harptree. I think it would be considered to be part of Litton. Sometimes, I think the exactness of the locations given on censuses depends on how familiar the enumerator was with local place names. I hope this helps.
