    3. Hi, the History of Parliament shows that Sir Robert Crosse made in 1611 a "nuncupative will at Moulsham, nr Chelmsford, bequeathing his possessions to Gregory Fennor who was to pay his debts and see him `christianly` buried. He died three weeks later on 18 Oct perhaps at Marten Abbey , Essex , where his last letters were written." So whilst he is said to be born in Charlinch he seems to have died in Essex . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Travis Cross" <justcro@gmail.com> To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 13, 2014 6:52 PM Subject: [ENG-SOM] Sir Robert CROSSE >I am a descendent of Sir Robert Crosse, and I would like a picture of his > tombstone or burial place. 3. Julie, With a name like Wills, there are probably dozens of possibilities. I'm wondering when and where they arrived in Australia. If they migrated shortly after a marriage around 1837, all the census records in the world won't find them. You've really given us few actual facts. You're saying general things like married around 1837, came to somewhere in Australia, two sons died young. You really need to be telling us specific names, dates and locations for each of these events. I find it hard to get motivated to help, if there's little sign of effort Peter

    3. Hi , from this 1841 and 1851 , it would seem that the Cross family are more Devon based. The Friends of Devon archives have put on line the Freeholders lists and for 1741 there is a William Cross at Farway . Farway and Southleigh both have OPCs who may be able to help further with the Cross family , see genuki/devon/farway or southleigh . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "SusanKellow" <ksusan1999@gmail.com> To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 02, 2014 11:09 AM Subject: Re: [ENG-SOM] Willis family from Marston Magna Somerset > Having nothing better than housework to do, I just had another search > through the census! 3. Afternoon all, www.wsom.org.uk has just been updated with Bishops Lydeard Baptisms now back to 1674 (which is as far as they go). I'm working similarly on Marriages going back the same and this will be followed by Burials. There is also an increase in Stogumber Burials, forward to 1861, thanks to Lesley Morgan. 3. Hi, if you go to genuki/devon and towns and parishes , and b for Branscombe, you will see that the chr are on familysearch from 1539-1812. The other thing about the 1851 census entry is that Charles Willis is a farmer of 120 acres employing 4 labs. And he and Caroline have 7 children all born Marston Magna . .With that amount of land tenanted or owned, there must be some connection with the parish for some time and probably Willis wills . Freereg has a marriage of a Charles Willis to Mary Cross in Stoke Trister in 1832 , both are of this parish . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "julie roberts" <dewie58@tadaust.org.au> To: <ENG-SOMERSET@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 02, 2014 9:56 AM Subject: [ENG-SOM] Willis family from Marston Magna Somerset > Happy new year to all. > I have my gg grandfather's family from Somerset and know not much about > them. > Charles Willis born abt 1809 Marston Magna Somerset and married Caroline > Cross in about 1837. > No parents of family known only neice Elizabeth Stacey on reocrds from > Trent and husband Mudford Somerset. > Any help appreciated as their 2 known sons died early in Australia. > Kind regards.Julie.Aust > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-SOMERSET-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. Having nothing better than housework to do, I just had another search through the census! Just in case Samuel and Martha CROSS were, indeed, Caroline's parents, I see that they, too, moved from Devon to Somerset, and in 1851 they were living at Yeovil (like their son, John). The household was: 1851 census Yeovil Marsh, Yeovil, Somerset Samuel CROSS, Head, Mar, 75, Dairyman, South Leigh, Devon Martha CROSS, Wife, Mar, 70, Farway, Devon Elizabeth CROSS, Dau, 40, South Leigh, Devon Thomas TUCKER, Serv, 14, Ash, Somerset In 1841, Samuel and Martha were living at Milborne Port, Somerset: 1841 census Kingsbury, Milborne Port, Somerset Samuel CROSS, 65, Dairyman, N Martha CROSS, 60, N Elizabeth CROSS, 30, N Charlotte CROSS, 20, Y Samuel EDWARDS, 15, MS, Y I do think there has to be a very strong probability that this is Caroline's family. Best wishes, Sue

    3. Hi Julie, I had a look for the WILLIS family in the censuses. In 1851, I see that Caroline WILLIS states that she was born circa 1808 at Branscombe, Devon. This is interesting, as I can see only one other CROSS connection to Marston Magna - on 12 Jan 1842, a son, John Legg CROSS, was baptized at Marston Magna to John and Jane CROSS. I tracked them down in the 1851 census by which time they had moved to Yeovil, Somerset; I found that John CROSS senior was born circa 1813, and also from Devon, making me think that he may have been Caroline's brother. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to trace a baptism for Caroline as yet, but I did find a website called the Branscombe Project, and this has a baptism for a John CROSS, bap 30 Jan 1814, Branscombe, son of Samuel and Martha "of Elverway, Dairyman". I think there has to be a very good chance that this is Caroline's brother, and therefore Caroline's parents. 3. I don't know if it's relevant or not... I had a look on FreeReg for a marriage, and found that a Charles WILLIS "bachelor, of this parish" married Mary CROSS "spinster, of this parish" on 11 Jun 1832 at Stoke Trister, Somerset. The witnesses were Thomas EDWARDS and Jane COOMBS. (The phrase "of this parish" doesn't necessarily mean that a person was born there, merely that they were established there). Is it possible that the mother's name may have been wrong, do you think? Hope this helps!
