If the those for the 1600s are available, that's where you'll be able to search the microfiche of them Have a look at their online catalogue that will tell you what they hold. Type Ilchester into the Title box. http://www1.somerset.gov.uk/archives/ -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
If you look at FreeReg.org.uk, look at counties and parishes coverage you will see virtually all of Ilchester has been transcribed. Just use the search on FreeReg and if they are in Ilchester, you should be able to find them. I now have proof that Joseph Drake son of Joseph was born abt 1798 in Bath - that was what he had on the 1851 census but he was living in London, so it may be a place near Bath not the city itself. They both came to London - and senior was a widower when he married in 1807 and so was junior when he married in 1826. So it would seem to be that they came to London fairly shortly after Joseph jnr was born. There seem to be very few records on the web in comparison to some other counties and I can't find anything for Bath. Any help would be gratefully received. Paul Eggleton

Hi Elizabeth, On FreeREG, DT indicates a Dwelly Transcript, BT a Bishops Transcript, PH is a Phillimores Transcript, and TR any other transcript that has now been transcribed again for the FreeREG database. You will start to see these abbreviations alongside the church name as files are loaded or reloaded in the future. Hi, if you look at Freereg it will show you that Crewkerne was last updated in April 2013 , and has 1599 ( DT) not sure what that means, but years completed meaning years transcribed, 1559-1890 bapts , marriages 1559-1812 Phillimores transcription, and 1559-1754. Burials 1599 (DT) 1558-1909 . If you check Freereg you will find Phelps for 1593 with 5 years + or - , there are no William Phelps bapt . There are other Phelps mainly in Stogumber but nothing for Crewkerne. The same applies to marriages with 5 years + or - 1616 . No marriage to Elizabeth Marshall. Of course this early there was no certaintly of spelling of surnames, and there may be something under Philips , or Phelips or Pheleps, etc. life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shirley Keyes" <shirley.keyes@frontier.com> To: <eng-somerset-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 22, 2014 8:30 PM Subject: [ENG-SOM] William Phelps Born >I am a descendant of William Phelps with following information. Elizabeth, You may have done it, but you need to convey the data so we don't have to repeat your efforts. Having said that, I noted a couple of trees on Ancestry, but nobody seems to get back earlier. But don't trust submitted trees. They are full of contradictions or copied errors that go unchecked. If you don't have an Ancestry subscription, you might Google Mundia, their associate site and search for Benjamin Jeffery and Mary Jennings. You might also try batch searching at Family Search. The Archer Software site shows the following batches for Pitcombe. Pitcombe ST670330 P002731 Births/Bapts 1538-1836 1975 Single YES M002731 Marriages 1567-1837 839 Single YES Using those batch numbers, you only need the family surname to do a basic search. Use surnames one at a time and gradually refine your search. I think you'll find Jane Cox was christened 1825 to William and Elizabeth. And if you look in the marriage batches you will find their marriage about 1822 which gives her maiden name. You could the do a modified search of the same christening batch using William and Elizabeth as parents. That would give Jane's siblings. It just builds from there.

Elizabeth, I like to see names, dates and locations. So I'd start with 1851 census and see what you can find. It should give ages and birthplaces of all those you are looking for. Then you can look for PR coverage in those areas. Peter
Hello Subscribers, Well it appears my lack of mail receipts is just that! A lack of subscriber mail, but it is strange that it is not only Eng-Somerset that is very quiet but all of the English lists to which I belong. Thanks for your replies and also for your geographical information. We really are spread over the earth's broad surface. So now lets see if we can have a bumper year for the list and kick down the genealogical barriers that we are all battling against. -- Regards, Tony mailto:Eng-somerset-admin@rootsweb.com in very hot Victoria Australia

There has been very little activity on a number of the lists I am on, I think the reason is the Northern Hemisphere is thawing out while the Australian listers are busy watching the cricket while their opponent were wishing they were all back home in England. Howard Newcastle Australia
