Hello Dave, If Eleanor was not from Mudford they may have married in her parish. I have Phillimore's Atlas & Index of Parish Registers & the person at the time of it being published who had the marriage index only had the marriage index starting at 1754. Boyds marriage index starts at 1563 for Mudford. I have a fiche for them but I no longer have a reader but I could take it somewhere next week. Ordering a film is probably the best way to go from where you are. Looking for all wills relating to the name you are researching also helps using a time frame of interest Just a thought. Hi, no you won`t directly from the internet , this is a reference from Somerset Record Office archives and you will need to contact them to get a copy . http://www1.somerset.gov.uk/archives/ they also have the parish registers of Mudford 1563-general registration post 1837 and would do a search for you ...........or you might find it easier to join the Somerset and Dorset FHS www.sdfhs.org or pay for their researchers to search Mudford........however there is a huge gap missing in Mudford PRs 1639-1775 bapts, marriages 1639-1754, and burials 1639 -1779. . There may be some Bishop`s Transcripts/Archdeacons Transcrips though for the missing periods. There is no reason for the family not to have been in Mudford for several generations but families did move around for work etc. and it is never wise to ignore neighbouring parishes , you would need to get a parish map . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: <jande1@xtra.co.nz> To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 12, 2014 7:09 AM Subject: Re: [ENG-SOM] Ellis Family of Mudford Somerset > Hi Elizabeth, > Thank you for the information. Hi Peter, Thanks for the email. The data I have came from the Mudford Parish Church records, I obtained these from the Latter Day Saints Church genealogy section, locally in Whangarei New Zealand. They ordered a film from Salt lake City. which gave the christening of Solomon Ellis son of William and Eleanor Ellis on the 11/10/1756. However the records did not go back any further. So where did William and Eleanor Ellis come from?? Thanks again for your email. Dave Ellis. New Zealand. ----- Original Message ----- From: "B. Hi Dave, I have a copy of the sheet put out by the Somerset Heritage Centre which holds the Mudford historical parish registers - they go back to 1563. Have a look in the FamilySearch catalogue, and you should find the film with all the parish registers for Mudford and order it in to your local LDS FHC. It would also be worth ordering in the film of Bishops Transcripts for Mudford - although not as complete as the parish registers coverage, you may find one easier to read than the other for some periods. Thank you Elizabeth, I guess this could me my man. The removal order would hardly be him as I think his age is fairly correct c 1765, but then one never knows if they handles the truth about age carefully. Regards Hazel

Hi, usually there was more than one misdemeanour to warrant a transportation order. and perhaps the spoon was one incident and the sheep another , and this in Somerset archives , Q/SR/355/3/4 which is Information of Elizabeth Austin of North Cadbury, who states that three men came to her door , one of which was carrying a hanger or cutlass with a saw at its back , these men are now in custody under the names of John Hewett, Charles Cross and William Cross. JP John Strode Thomas Coward. 26th June 1787. Earlier and from the same source, there is a removal order for Charles Cross, his wife Ann, their children Ann and William, to be removed from Stogursey to Axbridge , this being their last place of legal settlement. Dave, I tried to rush it, and did a botched job. When I saw "Details to be added" for Mudford, I assumed there was no data. But it's a description of the batch that's missing. If you click on the batch number, and search for Ellis you'll find 36 entries, although any without dates are probably duplicates. What's also strange is that it's a combination batch with 9 christenings, 4 marriages and 6 deaths. Thus the "I" prefix. Hope you find something of interest. But if the data's not there ? Peter
Dave, Sorry. It's a great technique, but when I looked Family Search, has no batches for Mudford. So where did you get data on the christening, marriage and burials? You could check for Mudford on the Family Search catalogue to see if they have anything on fiche or film that you could order in. Peter
Dave, Have you used batch searching? Look at http://www.archersoftware.co.uk/igi/index.htm Find Mudford under Somerset. That will tell you of earliest available records. Then just click on each batch and search using ELLIS. Peter

For years our CROSS committee has been trying to find some family of Charles CROSS. One member has paid a researcher and come up with a Charles CROSS bapt. West Bagborough in March 1765. This would fit our Charles’ birth as given at his death etc. His parents are given as Richard CROSS and Elizabeth as per FreeReg. Our Charles was tried at Bridgwater Assizes 11 August 1787 for stealing a spoon, the property of James HYDE. He was given 7 years in Australia and arrived per ‘Neptune’ in 1790. He liked Australia so did not go back to England and now he has over 35 000 descendants! Charles was 22 according to the newspaper when convicted but reported as stealing a sheep. Again, the age fits. In 2003/4 Jenny Mische kindly answered my earlier request and came up with the same Charles and she told me that there were plenty of CROSS’s around the area but no other Charles. Now ten years on I wonder if more has been done with Bridgwater Assizes, or anyone else is missing Charles from their Family. We would also love to know something about James HYDE. Was he a local or just unfortunate to be in Charles’ path. Regards Hazel FORD 3x great granddaughter Australia

Each time I see your update, I shake my head in wonder. You - and your transcriber-associates - are gems in this passionate pursuit of ours. I can't count the number of people who've thanked me for passing on your website (Ian Sage's too). Of course, you are the ones to thank. cheers, pamela in Bermuda -----Original Message----- From: eng-somerset-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-somerset-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Martin Southwood Sent: Tuesday, February 25, 2014 6:58 AM To: eng-somerset@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-SOM] Update Morning all, www.wsom.org.uk has just been updated with Taunton St. Mary Mag Baptisms brought forward to 1845 and also taken further back to 1750.
