Robert, In a private email to you on 07 January 2013 I wrote " For the time being, my CHICK interest doesn't seem to overlap with your family ". Well, I now see that Rose CHICK's mother was Caroline SPILLER (b.1848) who was a half-sister of my 2g grandfather James VICKERY (b.1822). Caroline wed George CHICK at Combe St Nicholas, the centre of my family history studies, on 21 July 1866. I can't confirm the 1898 Cheltenham marriage details but in the 1891 census the family of George & Caroline Chick, plus many children including Rose, aged 17, was recorded as 33 Gloster Place, Cheltenham! If you ever do get the marriage confirmation, whether by parish record or certificate, I'd be grateful if you would share the details please: thanks. In the journal of the Somerset Records Society (vol lxvii, pp 52-3) is an article "Sales of Wards in Somerset, 1603-41". One entry concerns the lands of Sir George Rodney who died in 1601. Francis Trenchard, age 19, was one of the heirs and I believe this documents was created because he was not of age. It describes the various properties and follows this format: "The Manor of Rodney Stoke ... held of the late Q. as of her Honour of Gloucester by K.S...." I assume Q refers to the queen but I don't understand the term "her Honour of Gloucester" (the property was in Somerset). Also, does anyone know what K S stands for? Donna
Hi Margaret, Distance can be a problem with researching records. Are you aware of the http://www.freereg.org.uk/ website? It is a growing resource of transcriptions of church registers and it has enabled me to break through a few brick walls where civil registration did not, but do check if "your" parishes have been transcribed before doing a search. Hi, Dimant is a name with many variants so Mary Diamond, Dimond, Dyment, etc are all possibilites . and Australia is very fortunate to have such detailed certificates .....my grandfather`s birth certificate told the whole story of my great grandparents how old they were , where they born, how long they had been in Australia , what other children they had and their ages . it was comprehensive !!! FreeReg has baptisms of Mary Diamond, Wookey 1783 , Mary Dimont, Kingston, 1791, Mary Dymont, Crewkerne , 1784 , Mary Dyment , Charlinch , 1788 ......so you may find she is one of these perhaps but it does give you some idea of the variants used at the time. life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "margaret pavljuk" <dustycarina@yahoo.com.au> To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2014 10:52 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-SOM] Update Martin, Im a Yard decendant from Taunton-Bridgwater-Staple Fitzpaine and beyond back to Devon. however ive found that Abraham Yard baptised 1813, becomes Gard by 1851 and dies Gard.
