I have digital copies of some of the St Mary;s, Bathwick burial registers, to be added to FreeREG in due course. The earlier registers get priority and I hadn't even looked at the one covering the 1880s until now ... and the folder's empty! I'll be able to get another copy but it may take a few days. My copy of the following register is intact and Emily is in there. Emily Grace Cooper, 27 Pulteney Street, Bath, aged 89, bur 20 Oct 1906 By the 1880s almost all the original parish graveyards in Bath were full and closed. Bathwick started two new graveyards at Smallcombe in the 1850s, one specifically for St Mary's and the other for all denominations. The latter had separate registers so as Emily is in the St Mary's register she was presumably buried in the St Mary's graveyard, and probably the rest of the family were as well. http://www.widcombeassociation.org.uk/Localhistorysociety/HN06%20Smallcom be%20cemeteries.pdf Bath Central Library has copies of the MIs from some of the cemeteries. I don't know if that includes St Mary's but I'll have a look next time I'm there. -- David Hartley
Hi Martin I didn't know abt the gravestone volunteer group, thank you for sharing. I have sent them an email asking about helping out with some of the small local cemeteries in my area in Queensland, Australia. Bath Abbey does hold some of their own archives and listings of inscriptions: www.bathabbey.org/history/abbey-archives Inscriptions of burials in the Abbey cemetery have been recorded and are held by the Abbey archives and Bath record office. The Abbey cemetery is not in the centre near the Abbey but off Ralph Allen Drive on one of the surrounding hills - but there could also be a memorial stone or inscription inside the Abbey. This page indicates that there were 2 "NEWNHAM" burials (and of course lots of COOPERs): www.widcombeassociation.org.uk/abbeycemeteryprogress.htm Celia ><snip> >Some time between April 1871 and August 1875 Charles Burton >Newenham, sometime Sheriff of South Australia and his wife Mary >Louisa n?e Darley, together with their daughter, Emily Grace, and >her husband, Sir Charles Cooper, sometime Chief Justice of South >Australia, moved to Bath where they lived in Pulteney Street. > >All four of them died in Bath: Mary - 28 March 1880, Sir Charles >? 24 April 1887, Charles ? 18 November 1887, Emily ? 18 October 1906. > >In this context I have three questions: >1. Dear Michael, There was an article in the Bath Weekly Chronicle dated 23 Feb 1888 concerning CHarels NEWENHAM's will. If you subscribe to findmypast.co.uk you can access this. Hi Michael, Have a look at http://www.freereg.org.uk/ which has transcriptions of many church baptism, marriage and burial registers. I've just had a quick look at the parish list and there are quite a few in Bath from the period you require, so searching there may produce results. Otherwise, look to see if there is an Online Parish Clerk (OPC) covering that area. Sorry Peter, I disagree, not everybody goes to cemeteries and takes photos. Jon
Hello Michael, Pulteney Street was in Bathwick parish so this seems a good suggestion - the records are likely to be at Bath and North East Somerset Record office or Somerset Heritage Centre. Evening all, www.wsom.org.uk has just been updated with Taunton St. Mary Mag Baptisms now back to 1700. This has taken quite a bit longer than expected as the wretch's kept putting in where people lived and what their job was!! Also my good friend Lesley Morgan has been dealing with difficult-to-read early stuff for Over Stowey, Baptisms and Burials, and as a result, these are now back to 1687ish. Not content with this, she very kindly taken on the early Register writing for St. Decumans (Watchet). As a temporary summer break from transcribing, I'm returning to help the Gravestone Photographic Resource Project with some local churchyards. If you've never come across it, have a look at http://www.gravestonephotos.com/index.php Even better, if you have time and the inclination, become a volunteer and help photograph gravestones around the world and add them to the Project's database (look at the Volunteers section). Robert, I think you have a number of choices. a) Buy the marriage certificate online from GRO for 9.75 pounds b) Find the couple with parents in 1891 or 1881 census. 1901 should give ages and birthplaces. c) Check for submitted trees on Ancestry, Mundia or Rootsweb d) Simply Google names in quotation marks.
