Author: DianneEllis24 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.som.general/12870.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello! I looked in Ancestry.com and someone submitted your family in Family Trees. James Davey was born before 1816, he had two children with mother unknown. The children were John, born 1831 in Taunton and was in the 1881 Census in Stockland, Devon. Jane, born 1837 in Taunton and was on the 1851-1881 Census in Stockland, Devon. You can contact me at dianneellis5@hotmail.com if you want me to send you the info on the Family Tree. I looked in www.familysearch.org for Taunton in Church Records, but there are so many Churches, unless you know the religion it would be hard to order a film from the Mormon Library. John and Jane's births may not have been recorded, but if you like I can contact the person who submitted the info, she must have proof, also would be related to you. Author: FrankB70 Surnames: Davey, Seward and Newton Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.som.general/12870/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I need help from someone experienced in Somerset to find my greatgrandmother's origin. Jane Davey was b. c.1834 according to her listing in the 1841 census where she is found age 7 living as the neice of Robert Newton with his family in Stockland, then Dorset, later Devon. She remained there thru 1851 when the census shows her as b.Somerset,Taunton and 1861 when the same family also contained as nephew my G.Grandfather James N Seward aged 19 presumably they were cousins. In 1863 she had married James and her marriage cert.gives her fathers name as James Davey, Farmer. In 1871 they are resident still in Stockland with 3 children and in 1881 as owners of the Kings Arms, with Janes brother, a John Davey aged 51 also b. Somerset,Taunton. I am stumped. I have been thru all of the parish records at tha Taunton record office that I could find in the area of Taunton for births of Daveys in the years 1829 to 1837 without success. Any guidance from a local expert would be much appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hello Peter, I have a few details of the STANDERWICKs of Upottery in Devon (almost certainly included amongst those you have already), but have not traced a connection to members of the family around Ilminster / Broadway in Somerset - even though it is not a great distance away. There is a slight possibility that the Joseph STANDERWICK you mention could be the son of Richard STANDERWICK of Broadway (1612-1675) : he had a son Joseph whom I've been unable to trace (the parish registers for Broadway and some of the nearby parishes do not have good coverage until the 18th century). However, there is also an entry for STANDERWICK in the Exeter registers in the 16th century, so any connection may go back much earlier. That there is a connection seems highly likely, given the singularity of the name. The thought occurs to me that there might be a reference to Joseph in the Hearth Tax records for Upottery, but I'm not sure what records survive for Devon. Anyway, if you want any information about the Somerset families, let me know. 3. Thank you so much Sue. What a star and how quick! I had got the 1861 census and managed to assess that a popular research site had got it wrong from their Chard reference.
