We assume that it was in the South Pittsburg Tennesse Hustler, 1940-1944, which would make the writer in his 70's: WILLIAM J NORMAN WRITES FROM "MUCH BLITZED BRISTOL, ENG" ABOUT RELATIVES This newspaper is in receipt of a letter from William J. Norman, of Bristol, England, in which he seeks to contact "descendants of John Norman," an uncle whom he says "emigrated from England to South Pittsburg [Tennessee] about 50 years ago." Norman, who says he is an old man now, and who claims to be a nephew of John Norman, says he used to correspond with his cousin, Miss Josephine Norman. He is the son of William Henry Norman, a brother of William J Norman. Anyone knowing these people, or having information that will be of worth to our inquiring neighbor across the way, will kindly transmit same to this newspaper so that it may continue a service it has long enjoyed. The letter follows: -------------- 4 Clayton St., Easton, Bristol S, England To the Editor, Dear Sir: Doubtless you are asked some strange questions, and here is one from much blitzed Bristol, England. I am seeking the descendants of John Norman, my uncle, who emigrated to Pittsburg about 50 years ago. I used to correspond with his daughter, Josephine, however, I am an old man now, and should be so grateful if through your paper, you would trace some of my cousins. I think John Norman was born in Tiverton, Devon, but I am the son of William Henry Norman, his brother. I was born at Loders Bridport, Dorset. I have now settled in Bristol for the last 30 years. Trusting that you will give me your help. Thanking you in anticipation, I remain Yours faithfully, WILLIAM J. NORMAN ---- Would love to make contact with any descendants. Yes please Charani, In Enumeration District 15 Pg 10 folio 23 Living with Richard and Hannah Dyer is a Richard ? Farmer born in Somerset Could you work out his surname, it looks like Liry, but that doesn't seem right. After transcribing all the rest of Hundred of Whitley, that spelling hasn't come up once. Brian I assume you mean when you say "On every certificate there is caution " That every certificate must be viewed and used with caution because most certificates contain lies and at the best guesses . If a person decides to get married, and that person is under 21 years of age, they need to get permission from the parent to allow it. This would be stated on the Certificate. If that person lied about his/her birth (ie under age and without parental permission) that marriage would/could be classed as void ! On the marriage Cert, they have two choices on status. Batchelor or Widower for the man, and Spinster or Widow for the female. On the marriage Cert, if the father is deceased, it would have to say so. On every Cert there is a caution. "There are offences relating to falsifying a Certificate and using or possessing a false Certificate" Your thoughts ? Afternoon all, My apologies to anyone trying to check on recent St. Decumans Baptisms but there was an error on the file name extensions that precluded the correct file loading. Many thanks to Anni Berman and friend for noticing. All fixed now. http://wsomparreg.mysite.orange.co.uk Cheers, Martin Southwood
