Hi Peter Washford is in Old Cleeve Parish and the most likely place for a burial is St Andrew's. I'm going down there at the beginning of June and could have a look round the churchyard if you haven't found what you want before then. What name are you looking for? Hi, I'm new to this list - look forward to taking part. Can I start with a plea for help? I had an ancestor who died in Washford, Som, in 1967 - would SKS be able to point me to a likely location for his burial? And is there any chance of finding details of grave location or MI information online? Cheers Peter

I think you are referring to a lease of land for the lifetime of three people (usually of two or more generations - often husband, wife, and a son). This type of lease was also often made in the American colonies and I have seen it in Virginia records of colonial times. Not long ago, I obtained from the Somerset Record Office a copy of an ancestor's lease of farm land in the 1770s in Lydeard St. Lawrence, Somerset (it was for 14 years, which was a common duration of leases of that time and place). The lease was among a family's papers held by their solicitor and rather recently deposited at the Record Office. This particular lease was listed on their web site, which is how I learned of it's existence. I think it probably is usual that leases remained with the owners' family or with their legal papers, and could be difficult to find. But you might get lucky! You might check the Record Office website and perhaps inquire of the Record Office for guidance. For LDS film possibilities, look under Frome. There is always a description of film contents. Author: LoisMasters63 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.som.general/12879.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hope I get this accurately. In England and Ireland, land was owned by gentry. Ourtright land ownership by the larger population did not exist. However, an individual or family might lease a piece of property for an annual stipend. I have seen a lease of lives which spanned several generations. It is not unusual for a lease of lives to name a father and two sons or a father, a wife and one child. The lease of lives would either go for a set period of (for example) 31 years; perhaps 99 years or it would go to the "longest liver" of the people identified. If there was an untimely death of one of the parties, the lessee could re-negotiate and add another child to the agreement. That would generate another record. If the agreement has been mutually beneficial to both parties, a researcher can see this "lease" being continued in subsequent generations. Which address would that be? The message left on the Message Board by kedwards37 was moved off the board as it had no connection with the genealogical subject of the ENG-SOMERSET board.
