I'll have a look next time I go passed. There's a plaque on it detailing its history. It's a very grand building but no longer a hospital or anything connected with medicine now, although (IIRC) it did retain some connections until a few years ago. It had been closed up for a while before then. > The Leper Hospital is now houses but still thatched. Where is that? I've not seen it at all, but then I don't know Taunton all that well. Just how to get there and cross it by public transport to get to the record office :)) -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
Fascinating to think of someone driving through a hospital! Don't know much about the Taunton Hospital but the building is still there; I think it is about 200 years old but it may not be the original building. Thanks for the clarification :)) I knew Musgrove had been a military hosp at one time because there are still signs above some doors referring to their previous use (such as Mess Hall IIRC). The corridors are also wide enough to allow vehicles to be driven down them! I was under the impression that the hospital in East Reach had been a nursing home or women's hospital. Hello list, The other day I read this on another family history list. ___________________________________________________________ You can access newspapers back to 17th century on a free trial at Gale - British Library - I have found hundreds of references to my families - great with BDM notices too: http://access.gale.com/gdctrial/ in "Institution" type international _____________________________________________________________ It worked for me with no problems, and the friendly email that I received from the Gale Digital Collection Trial Site included this: "The access period is limited, so don't delay in exploring the products and sharing it with your colleagues" So that's what I'm doing now, colleagues. Enjoy! (It actually includes much more than the British Library digitised collections.) Sue
The main hospital was Taunton Hospital in East Reach. Musgrove Park did not go over to National Health until after WW2 as it was a military hospital. And there is also the lepers hospital of course! Philip Maddocks

I believe most births then were still home births but if there were complications, or, possibly more likely, if the mother went into labour whilst visiting family or friends within the Taunton RD, she could have been taken there or had the child at a relative's or friend's home. > In any event, Steve now has a few options to consider. To all, Many thanks for your information regarding young William. The district for Clatworthy would have been Wiliton, as most others from that family were registered there. William would have died at home, due to having his back broken whilst helping with the shearing season. (A ram knocked him backwards over the gate I'm told) I'm not to sure where the child wa born as it may have been at Clatworthy OR Cardiff, the family were always back & forth as William Snr had brothers still living over in Cardiff. One of the younger members was born there I know for sure. Mnn still a mystery I guess! Many thanks for your very kind help. Unless the child was born at Musgrove Park Hospital, in which case it would be correct. If the child were to have died at Musgrove, the death would be registered there and not where he usually lived which could also through a researcher off track. Of course, the baptism and burial were far more likely to have taken place where the family lived. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

Charlotte came over on the same ship "Trusty" with her husband Dr Henry Allen (later returned to England). John and Maria were married in Stapleton Gloucester in 1818 and their witnesses were Fanny and ? Rees. In the 1841 census the Lock family lived at 9 New Bond St Place, Bath. John and his brother? Joel were proprieters of the Rainbow Inn in Upper Borough Walls Bath, where John also had a bottle and leech warehouse. Later John and his son Henry had a merchant trading business in Moka St, Port Louis, Mauritius. They both died there, John in 1862 (aged 63) and Henry in 1880 (aged 57). Maria died at Busselton WA (aged 86?) in the home they built named "Lockeville" (the family was well known in Australia for racing and breeding horses on this property). John jnr married Mary Layman in WA, Eli! zabeth married George Sadler in WA (later returned to England) and Henry married Letitia Duman in Mauritius. Any info on the Lock family would be greatly appreciated as I would like to find out the names of John and Maria's parents and where they were born. I would also like to find the baptism registers for John, Henry, Charlotte and Elizabeth as they were all noted to be born in Bath in the 1841 census. Linda.
