Depends much on what you want to do and where you want to visit. Also when you travel can have an effect on cost. Avoid school holidays and public holidays for instance. Self contained is cheapest; B&B can be very expensive; you might try for 'weekly rates' mid term or 'off' season. Hi Folks I have been following this thread in the archives, but not right at the beginning, I notice that most of the mention is regarding Musgrove Park Hospital and the old East Reach Hospital, where I was a frequent visitor to A&E, this hospital has now been turned to offices and was recently used by the Careers Service, or whatever they call themselves today, this was opened in 1812 and supported by public subscription, Taken from a Description of Taunton from Pigot and Co.'s National Commercial Directory of Somerset 1830:- the infirmary called 'the Taunton and Somerset hospital and an infirmary for diseases of the eye", this was a couple of doors away from the main hospital and latterly used as an out patients department. Mention has also been made about the old Leper House, now restored after a fire in the thatched roof, and converted to housing. I have not seen any reference to the other hospitals, there was the isolation Hospital in Cheddon Road, not sure when this was built but certainly before 1940 as my elder brother spent some time there, there was also Canon Street, a maternity hospital, or nursing home as it would have been called then, again this was built and in operation long before the advent of the NHS, brother was born there in 1930 and I don’t think he was one of the first, I could be wrong!! There was also the Workhouse which saw the birth of many children from various parts of the area, many being sent in from outside the town for concealment! East reach hospital was the main a and e centre in Taunton before Musgrove built the duchess building where a and e is now, I believe there was also geriatric wards there before it closed. My brother did part of his nurse training there in the early 1990s Louise

Hello Listers, I am revisiting this list in desperation for information regarding ROBERT HURST, a butcher journeyman in the Yeovil area in early 1900. He fathered two children with LILIAN ANNIE PERRY born Lewisham, Kent 1873. The marriage still eludes me. KATHLEEN PERRY HURST born 24.01.1902 Wales Cottage, Queen Camel STEPHEN HAROLD HURST born 04.07.1904 Court Ash, Yeovil The 1901 census for Queen Camel shows: The Bell ANNIE PERRY age 20 Domestic Servant Where born: Unknown Does she fit into your tree? I have an extract from the 1915 National Registration Census which lists all Perry's aged between 16 & 65 residing in Yeovil. If you would like a copy please contact me off list. Ron
A distant cousin of mine found EDWARD SEAGER PERRY on the 1881 census living in Croydon, Surrey with his family. I have been unable to find his birth registration but on the 1881 census his eldest daughter May was born on ship bound for England from Australia. I found the entry for the birth as being 3/8/1876 on ss Nothumberland with the parents being Edward Seager Perry and Priscilla Ada Savage. I was wondering if any kind person in Australia could help me find the marriage of the above two people so that I could possibly find the name of his father. I do not know where in Australia they were living but maybe some census info for 1871 would help, or whatever year applies. Priscilla was christened as Priscilla Jane Ada Savage in 1843 in Portsea, Hampshire. Many thanks in advance for any assistance. Regards Harry

on an even smaller point 1948 was after WW2 :-) Perhaps I should have said that it did not become a public hospital until after the war and it was a military hospital during and just after the War thanks Philip ----- Original Message ----- From: "James ~Pitman" <james.pitman@talktalk.net> To: <eng-somerset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 17, 2008 10:27 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-SOM] Taunton Hospitals > May I correct a small point we are this year celebrating the 60th > anniversary of the National Health Service which began in 1948 so all > hospitals before then were private that is you paid for treatment. > > James Pitman. > > <snip> > Philip Maddocks wrote: > > Musgrove Park did not go over to National Health until after WW2 as it > was > a military hospital. > <snip> > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-SOMERSET-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message
May I correct a small point we are this year celebrating the 60th anniversary of the National Health Service which began in 1948 so all hospitals before then were private that is you paid for treatment. Hi List. Could someone please tell me if there was a Hospital or Sanatorium in the Bedminster/ Walton-in-Gordano area in 1895/6. Thank you. Brian.

The initial free trial was specifically for one American university only. It wasn't meant for anyone outside the university. Access was closed once it was realised what had happened. However, Gale were obviously well aware of the scale of interest, hence the subsequent free time limited trial. > They have then granted me a full months free usage because I filled in the > form honestly. I have been able to have free access to this site since 24 March when I picked the information up on another list. (Sorry I should have passed the info on to you as I did to some other lists). Because of the initial rush on the original scheme they produced simpler system and a form to fill in which I duly did. They have then granted me a full months free usage because I filled in the form honestly. I now have at least 2 reams of obituaries, articles, new facts about horrendous family accidents and unfortunate circumstances which I would never have found. It will keep me busy for years - So much so that I keep forgetting to tell people what a wonderful source of information this is. They even shipped to me a full pack of data to me in France to read and consider. Not had time yet! Best of all I found out that the source is located at Walworth Industrial Estate Andover where a great many of my family are from and a town in which I still have business interests. Must close - back to searching for more family facts! Hi Sue, Thanks very much for this, through their database I found this: ---- SAD CASE OF ACCIDENTAL POISONING A sad case of accidental poisoning occured at Kings Farm, Furneaux Pelham, yesterday. The occupier, Mrs Ann Pottrell, a widow in her seventy- ninth year, who was under medical treatment, went to a cupboard where she kept the mixture prescribed for her and a lotion. She drank by mistake a wineglassful of the latter. She directly afterwards discovered her error. Medical assistance was called in, but the poor woman died in about three hours. ---- That's a really horrible way to go! :( Tony Charani wrote: > Sue Ahrens wrote: > > >> with BDM notices too: >> http://access.gale.com/gdctrial/ >> >> in "Institution" type international >> > > Institution should be either "none" or "other" and location is > "International" unless you are based in the USA >
Pass the old hospital on your right; continue down East Reach to the traffic lights and turn right and immediately left. It is a few yards on on the left. it looks really out of place.
