    3. Hello Christine, In June and July 2006 my husband and I hired a car and spent almost 6 weeks in England as Scotland visiting the places (as well as other sightseeing) where we knew our ancestors had lived. Before we left Australia we joined the Youth Hostels Association of Australia. We stayed at B&Bs and YHAs. B&Bs are more expensive, and the large breakfasts were enough to last us almost all day. They have tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. We found that the YHAs were cheaper, but also very good. These are self catering and we found that food at the supermarkets cost much the same as it does in Australia. While most of the guests at YHAs were young people, they catered for people of all ages from young families with children to us oldies in our 60s. Being the busy time of the year, and sometimes in the more popular locations, my husband and I had to split up and go into separate dormitories, but there were several times when we were given a room to ourselves. They were clean and and all bedding was supplied. Both B&Bs and YHAs can be booked ahead. We were able to stay in a B&B in Scotland which had once been the Clan Chief's home. Some YHAs have been established in buildings which were once used for other purposes, so in England we stayed in what had once been a slate mine on cliffs high above the Atlantic Ocean, and in Scotland we stayed in a castle, a mansion built by a tobacco baron, and a blackhouse in the Outer Hebrides (also on the shores of the Atlantic). Have a really good and successful trip , Wendy On 19/04/2008, at 10:37 AM, Christine wrote: > > Hello List, > > I am planning a research trip to England, Ireland & Scotland next > year; I > have never visited before. > > I am looking for suggestions of where to stay in the west country > for 2 > weeks. 3. On the 1871 Census for the Civil Parish of Wellington, Page 8, the entry second from the bottom is for a "Harriett GILLARD" female age 29 unmarried, an inmate of the Wellington Workhouse on North Street. She was reported to have been born in Devon, Culmstock. This probably is not what you were asking but may be a clue as to where else to look for the marriage you had in mind. As she would have been 22 the year of the marriage in question, there could possibly be a relationship here. 3. Travelers to England, Others have talked about B&Bs and other options. We have a thought about rental cars. It may be significantly cheaper to rent the car from your own country BEFORE arriving in England. It certainly was from the USA. So it is well worth making a few phone calls before hand and ask the car rental people. In addition, if you pay for the rental with a gold card, one of the benefits of a gold car is rental car insurance. Between renting in the United States and not having to accept the extra insurance that the rental agency in England would have added on, the price difference was the equivalent of $5,000 in England and $2,000 from the US with a gold card. Sorry we don't recall the name of the extra insurance but telephone your gold card provider. They will be able to tell you all about it. 3. Dear Christine, I've done it twice! the first time, for SE Somerset,[Wincanton, Bayford] we bought Britrail passes [from London to Templecombe] and then used local busses and walked! it's do-able if you are fit and not too old...[we are retired!]. We stayed at B & Bs and yes, about 25-30 pounds per night per..but the hearty breakfast can hold you for the day. If you are interested in ONE village, it is indeed fun to stay where your ancestors lived. The second time, cousins rented a car and we got around more...but it wasnt BETTER, just different. It's likely a better option if you want to visit many villages or some distances. The best thing is the availability of bus/train etc schedules on the internet so you can plan. Or write/email for paper version of local bus schedules. We also booked our accommodations from home before our trip the second time. We were very lucky with lovely accomms and warm hosts. The first time, we just took pot luck. Dont think I am as flexible as I age, though. This is info from a tourist...the locals are really likely better to offer advice. we too are going again this year and back to Somerset but for Taunton and archives...so folks there, any tips for Taunton welcome. cheers Liz of BC Canada >Hello List, > >I am planning a research trip to England, Ireland & Scotland next year; I >have never visited before. > >I am looking for suggestions of where to stay in the west country for 2 >weeks. 3. 1. Where will you need to go for your research? 2. In the time you have left for sightseeing you must visit Bath. 3. If you have to travel around much especially in rural areas you would be better to hire a car. Tell us your area of research and we can give better advice. 3. Agreed... for nightly B&B's I'd budget around £25-£30 per person per night for most places. Avoid late July to early September as that's the peak holiday season, B&B/hotel prices get inflated during this period and travelling around especially on the M5 southbound gets a little lengthy. June would probably (IMO) be the best time to visit. Where in the UK (presumably somewhere in somerset?) are you planning on visiting?
