    3. Hi Jennifer, Sorry I can't help with your NICHOLAS family, but the name George Tilly VAGG rang bells. I have a George TILLEY who married Francis DAVIDGE 4 Nov 1780 in Curry Rivel, Somerset. I have not followed this family forward, but I have a feeling that George Tilly VAGG would be a descendant. Do you have the ancestors of George Tilly VAGG? Does George TILLEY appear in his line? 3. I'm rather curious as to what crime Tamar Eason committed, when she committed the crime and the resultant prison sentence? At the census of 1851, at 16 years of age, she was in care at a workhouse with half-siblings and then, by 1853 she had not only migrated to Australia but had been married in Victoria, Australia, presumably after re-uniting with her father as she resided in the same area. see that wonderful Merriot Families site at http://www.merriottfamiliesgenealogy.net/eason_to_australia.htm This timescale leaves little time for Tamar to serve the sort of sentences they handed out those days so perhaps it was before her sixteenth birthday? 2. Dennis White
    3. Hi Di, Tomi, There is also a difference in the way that baptisms are carried out. Whereas Anglicans, and several other denominations merely sprinkle water on the head, Baptists are immersed in water completely, believing that that was the way it was done in biblical times. I've known some Anglicans being baptised in Baptist Churches when they become adults, but staying with their own Church. 3. To Don and Harry, my deepest thanks for your kindness in helping me with this query. It's very much appreciated! Yes Harry, I could read that fine as its' text, which is what my computer speech programme relies on. Sadly it can't read text on graphics, and if it could, I think 19th century handwriting would still be well out of its capabilities. Once again my sincerest thanks to you both. If anyone else also sent details, my BT spam filter may have sidled it off to the bulk folder, so my apologies if your name wasn't included above. Kindest regards to all on the Somerset list, Jon

    1. Re: [ENG-SOM] CANN New Member

    3. Does this sound like yours? There is a a marriage of Robert CANN and Catherine LOCK in North Molton, Devon. The IGI batch number is M522811. The date is 13 May 1821. In the 1851 census: Catherine is listed as age 57 born about 1794 in North Molton, DEVON. The family was living in the civil parish of Exford, the Ecclesiastical parish of Bath and Wells, in the county of SOMERSET.. Robert is listed as born in 1779 so he was about 15 years older than Catherine. His birthplace is given as Exford, SOMERSET. Exford is nine miles from North Malton. Children living with them in 1851 are Michael born 1842 and John born 1822 and they are identified as being born in Molland, DEVON. Molland is about 7 miles from Exford, SOMERSET. The reference is HO107 piece 1890 folio 330 page 16 GSU 221040. I didn't find George in 1851 census. However, the IGI shows a George Cann, age 47 (birth 1834) born in Spreyton, DEVON. I don't know the geography at all (all distances cited are from Genuki) so don't know the likelihood of this being your George. His wife Mary was born in Chagford, DEVON. I'm only suggesting this because he is born at the right time and his eldest daughter is named CATHERINE M. CANN. In 1881 the family was in Crediton, Devon. Reference is RG11 piece/folio 2230/37, page 15.
