Hi, Further to this, which I wrote yesterday.......> My husband's 3x Great Grandfather Edward CLEGG was born in Ovenden, Halifax, around 1821. He was a dyer and presumably moved to Somerset for a while to work in the carpet industry before moving back to Yorkshire. He married Mary POWELL in Wilton, Somerset in 1848, had several children including William Henry CLEGG, born 1848 in Wellington, Somerset, my husband's GG Grandfather. Mary POWELL was the daughter of James POWELL and Sarah GILES and was born in Runnington, Somerset.< Edward CLEGG married Mary POWELL in Wilton, in 1848. Ancestry has another marriage for an Edward CLEGG, Wellington RD in 1843. Is there any way (other than buying the certificate) that I could find out if this is also my husband's ancestor? I can't see another Edward CLEGG in the 1851 census, and of the 4 females on the marriage page, one was Jane POWELL. I'm interested in finding out if Edward married Mary's sister Jane before he married Mary. My reasoning behind this is that in 1851, living with Edward and Mary was Walker CLEGG, born before the marriage of Edward and Mary. Against this is the fact that Edward is a bachelor on the certificate of his marriage to Mary. Was this a mistake, or am I completely barking up the wrong tree? Can SKS please look up the marriage of Edward CLEGG in 1843 and/or the baptism of Walker CLEGG in 1845, probably in Wellington? On the POWELL side, I can find baptisms of the first 5 children of James POWELL and Sarah GILES in Wellington, but not the baptisms of my husband's ancestor Mary POWELL and her 2 younger sisters. I'm not sure about Elizabeth and Maria, but Mary's census gives her place of birth as Runnington. Does anyone have access to the Runnington parish records, and would please look up the baptism of Mary POWELL born c1828? Thank you. Thanks for trying again p but it didn't work! I don't know why some people are seeing a message and I'm seeing a blank page. And there's no evidence of HTML. Not that there would be if it had been trimmed out. Hi, I am a new member with a very small interest in Somerset. One I have known about for quite a while. My husband's 3x Great Grandfather Edward CLEGG was born in Ovenden, Halifax, around 1821. Mary POWELL was the daughter of James POWELL and Sarah GILES and was born in Runnington, Somerset. The second Somerset link is a very new one. I have had a brick wall for 2 years regarding my GG Grandfather Edwin HAWTHORN who was born around 1811 in Ireland. I am waiting for a document from Kew concerning his father from his marriage certificate, Thomas HAWTHORN who was stated as a major in the 57th regiment. The document at Kew states that Thomas was born in Bristol, Somerset c1754. I suspect that he may have been Edwin's grandfather rather than father, and that although he was in the 57th, he probably wasn't a major! I am hoping Thomas's discharge papers may give me more information. As for me....well I live in Hull, Yorkshire and started researching my family tree after the death of my mother in 2005, starting with her paternal HAWTHORN ancestors, but as she was an only child I have had no help in that direction. My father's RAWLING ancestors were easier to find, and as he had siblings, some of whom are still alive, I have had a little help there. Strangely enough, my dad's brother (Norman) Alan was a prison officer and lived in Gloucestershire, around the Bristol area for many years before he died there last year. I do have Somerset related questions and/or requests, but I will leave those for another time. I hope that someone somewhere might be researching my family interests and may have one or more of them in their trees.
