    1. Re: [ENG-SOM] Mendip hospital

    3. Hi Pauline, This may not be very helpful, unless you happen to live somewhere close. About five years ago, with an hour or so 'to kill' whilst waiting for transport, I ventured into the public library at Wells to see what I could discover about "The Somerset And Bath Lunatic Asylum", later to be known as "The Mendip Hospital". The librarian was able to take me to the appropriate shelf where I found a delightful little book [about 120 pages roughly A5 size] written by a lady whose father, or perhaps grandfather, worked at the hospital. The author wrote of her childhood memories of the social life at the hospital; events such as the Christmas plays which the hospital staff put-on for the inmates. I have vague recollections of some of the rules which applied to the staff, such as requiring permission from the hospital management before getting married (else lose their job). For someone such as yourself I'm sure it would make fascinating reading. The sad part is, I made no notes at the time and now have no chance of giving you a reference for the book, short of revisiting the library. My quick dip into Google just now didn't provide me any reminders. Regards, Jenny -----Original Message----- From: eng-somerset-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-somerset-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pauline Sieler Sent: 23 May 2008 08:51 To: ENG-SOMERSET@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-SOM] Mendip hospital My great grandfather Francis Cook b 1838 was an attendant at the Mendip Hospital during his lifetime Does anyone know anything about the hospital or any records tat they mat have please? 3. Thanks Mark, I have just been on the Somerset OPC website and did not find a William there. I think that after looking at my William Peachs that I have in my family tree that he may have originally come from Rampisham in Dorset and his family moved to Charlton Horethorne so I am following that lead at present. Will check free Reg though. Thanks for the suggestion. I shall be chasing them this morning to iron out the problem but from what I can see so far its mainly on the most recent parishes while the ones entered 2-3 years ago seem OK. Bear with us! 3. Hi List, I am helping a sister in law and have a MARY JANE TAMES married to EDWIN HAWKINS in June Quarter 1881 Taunton District. Later census give place of birth for Mary Jane as Taunton born abt 1853. There is a MARY JANE JAMES in the birth index for Dec Q. 1853, with a marriage of James James and Mary Ann Woolcott in Sept Q. 1852. 1881 census has Mary J.age 27, at 23 Paul St, Taunton with parents James and Mary Ann surname TAMES 1871 census has the family at 14 Paul St , but no Mary J. There is a possible as Mary J. James in St Sidwell Devon age 20. 1861 at Factory Court Mary J. age 8, again looks like Tames. James is a sweep in all census but his age goes from 32 in "61, 36 in "71 to 45 in"' 81, wife goes from30 to 32 to 40. Ancestry has the family indexed various ways including as Turner in 1881. Is anybody researching this family or can tell me if Tames is a Somerset name. Thanks for any help Daphne. New Zealand.
