    1. [ENG-SOM] Fry family - Batheaston parish
    2. Chris & Meegan Ferguson
    3. Hi Trish J I don't know if there is any connection as I haven't been able to find any further back than Eliza and am assuming she was from around Batheaston as she died there and the children were born there. How close is that to your Fry family home, Trish? Do you know if your Ann had brothers as that time might fit - that is, it is about the age Eliza's parents may have been. Don't suppose anyone has access to the parish records for Frys at all? That would help out enormously if you can Would love to tie this family down but mayn't be able to - thanks Trish Meegan

    1. [ENG-SOM] FRY family Batheaston
    2. Chris & Meegan Ferguson
    3. Hi Beryl Thanks for replying. I don't know much more else about Eliza FRY than I mentioned in the message ie she was b abt 1810 and died 1838 aged 28, registered at Batheaston. She was married to John LEWIS in 1830 in Batheaston. Don't know if they had any It looks as though your Frys could well be another family as the ages look older than would be the parents of my Eliza as they were possibly (and this is a big assumption) b. abt the late 1780s. Are any of your Frys from the Batheaston area? Cheers and thanks Meegan

    1. Re: [ENG-SOM] HOCKEY FAMILY
    2. If I have the right people, William HOCKEY was buried at Charlton Adam on 18 October 1885 aged 81 and his wife Martha was buried at Adam on 11 May 1866 aged 61. In 1871 William still had three unmarried children (Walter, Lucy Ann & Louisa) living with him, as well as his older unmarried sister Ann HOCKEY aged 75. William HOCKEY and Martha WALTER were married at Charlton Adam on 6 September 1827 (both were able to sign their names). Martha WALTER, daughter of John and Sarah WALTER, was baptised at Charlton Adam on 21 April 1805 (from the BTs and, though it is faint on the microfiche, the CA Register) but her parents - John WALTER and Sarah COATE - were married at Keinton Mandeville on 27 December 1802. I think there may be a baptism for William HOCKEY son of Thomas and Elizabeth at Charlton Adam in 1804, possibly October 10th, but need to check that as the page is extremely difficult to read and unfortunately there is no surviving BT for that year. Thomas and Elizabeth HOCKEY did also have a daughter Ann baptised at CA on 19 November 1797. Thomas HOCKEY and Elizabeth SHEPARD were married at Charlton Adam on 20 September 1789. We have acquired some information about other HOCKEY families and their descendants and would be interested to know more about your HOCKEY connection. We are starting to transcribe local records and put them online, so you may find more if you check our website from time to time. An update is (over)due soon! 3. Hi .. When asking for information it is best to put every date you have - birth, death etc., as I have a great many FRY people and it is too hard to check without more information. For instance - I have James Fry 1824/1881 married to Fanny Mitchell. He was the son of William Fry and Elizabeth Chant. Another James was born about 1854, the son of James Fry and Fanny Mitchell. There is Ann Fry born 1868 daughter of George Fry and Patience Gray. Perhaps you could send me the FRY information you have in case I can match others. Maybe this helps. Beryl Renton in Brisbane . 1. Re: [ENG-SOM] Brick and tile making in Bridgewater.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: kevinpearce61 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.som.general/4180.5/mb.ashx Message Board Post: History The Brick and Tile Trade For much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the brick and tile industry provided the financial backbone to the town. Local clay had long been used for making bricks as far back as mediaeval times, but it wasn't until the end of the seventeenth century that the potential for clay as a commercial product was realised. The present day police station marks the spot where the first commercial brickyard was formed, the next being at Hamp (1709) and another at Crowpill (1720). The hand-made bricks from these sites can be seen in Friarn Street, Dampiet Street and St Mary Street. More yards sprang up along the river as the demand increased and, by the end of the eighteenth century, brick making was recognisable as an industry. By 1776, the Sealey family had a yard at Hamp. Permanent buildings had arrived with purpose-built up-draught kilns producing bricks. This industrialisation led to improved standards, better quality bricks and a more reliable supply. The demand began to arrive from further afield and brickyards sprang up from Burnham-on-Sea to Burrowbridge. Clay varied from area to area, the clay at Chilton Trinity being particularly good for tile manufacture. Despite the limited geographic spread, the centre of the industry remained focussed on Bridgwater with the following amongst the recognised manufacturers: John Sealey Hamp Colthurst and Symons Castle Fields, Burnham, Somerset Bridge, Somerset Yard, Screech Owl, Puriton and Combwich John Browne Chilton Tile Factory, Old Taunton Road, Dunwear, Chilton Old Yard and Pawlett John Browne and William Champion Hamp John Symons Saltlands William Maidment Parrett Works (Bristol Road) John Board Wylds Road Barham Brothers East Quay H J and C Major Salmon Parade, Taunton Road and Colley Lane W Robins Parrett Way J B Hammill (previously R Ford) Chilton Trinity The main products were the red bricks and Double Roman roof tiles for which William Symons can take the credit. The kilns for firing these items could take up to 5,000 at a time and the temperature had to be just right if the tiles were not to crack in the firing process. The kilns would be loaded with faggots of wood and around 10 tons of coal. At the end of four days, the kilns would be sealed to extinguish the fire and left for four days to cool. In addition to bricks and tiles, ornamental gable ends were produced and examples of these can still be seen in St John Street. These products ended up all over the world: the Bronx in New York; China; Canada; Australia and New Zealand. So great was the trade that, in 1903, a new wharf was built to take the cargoes. Life was hard in the brickyards. At one time, half the male population of the town was employed in the industry. During the winter, the ground would be too hard to dig, and half of the workforce would be laid off. The work being so seasonal, winter unemployment levels were incredibly high, hence the need to establish the workhouse at Northgate. By 1840 there were 1,300 brickyard workers in Bridgwater and by 1850 the number of sites within two miles of the town centre had grown to 16. Conditions were so poor that by the end of the nineteenth century, the time was right for trade unionism. Brickyard bosses argued that low wages were essential for the survival of the yards and the workers argued that better wages were essential for the survival of their families - and it was that serious, there being no social welfare, only the workhouse. In 1886 an unsuccessful strike ended after eight weeks, with the employers refusing to negotiate and hunger driving the workforce back, having achieved nothing except eight weeks with no wages. In 1890, there was a repeat of the industrial action but with much greater effect. Six hundred workers withdrew their labour. Once again the workforce were driven back by hunger, but now they had grown in confidence as a union movement. A further strike in 1893 was followed by two years during which the brickyard workers moved towards the Dock, Wharf, Riverside and General Workers Union. 3. Good evening list: Wondering if anyone can lay claim to an Eleanor Bryant, who most likely was living in Shepton Mallet in 1821? And maybe her husband's name began with an 'H'? She witnessed the 1821 Will of Thomas Strode of Shepton Mallet. As far as I can see so far, the Bryants and Strodes were very much inter-mingled about this time in Shepton Mallet. Can anyone help with details of any Bryants of Shepton Mallet around this time frame? Any news will be greatly appreciated. Best wishes, Helen Mitchell Australia

    3. Hello everyone As a new member of the list I would like to seek the advice of the more seasoned researchers out there. I am researching my maternal line which is Gillard. I have succeeded in establishing the direct line as far as Richard Gillard (abt 1760) possibly of Cricket St Thomas, who married Hannah Wheadon (1763? - 1819). There appear to be a substantial number of Gillard groupings in the Crewkerne/Chard area and I would like to see if I can establish the links as well as push the line further back and investigate the collateral lines if time permits. You can probably all tell that I am relatively new at this and I apologise if my mail has transgressed any etiquette or protocols. Any pointers as to the way forward would be very gratefully received. My tree is on ancestry.com for those who use that site but both Lynn and I are happy to send it as a gedcom file to anyone who would like to share our research. Kind regards to all.
